SamD
This has been a topic at our office for a while and I finally solved my curiosity today. It happened on March 7th. I'm not sure what "it" was, but you can't tell me the below image is "within tolerance". It's a comparison of the NJWeatherNet site in Berkley Twp vs KNEL and shows that something clearly changed. johnc
Good eye. I guess it was the range training after all: http://www.courierpostonline.com/article/20130309/NEWS01/303090055/Hear-boom-Marines-conduct-range-training-Fort-Dix
SamD
Interesting theory, though I think it was the storm on March 6th with winds over 50mph and continued breezy conditions which had a hand in something going wrong. They had not been 4 degrees different in at least 85 days prior and then split to about 4 degrees different throughout all of the 7th and after 10p on the 7th just split forever, shown in the prior chart (http://www.americanwx.com/bb/index.php/gallery/image/98-the-knel-difference/). Mitchell Gaines
Walt Drag posted this in our AFD yesterday. KNEL: FYI...NOTICED THE MAX TEMPERATURE HAD A SUBSTANTIAL DAILYWARM DEPARTURE CHANGE OF NEARLY 10 DEGREES WARMER THAN SURROUNDINGNJ REPORTING STATIONS ON PARTLY SUNNY OR SUNNY DAYS BEGINNINGAROUND MARCH 9TH. THAT DATA HAS NOT POSTED IN OUR RWR AND RTPSINCE EARLY APRIL. THE NEAR 100 DEGREE READINGS OF THE PAST TWODAYS AT KNEL NEEDS TO BE IGNORED FOR NORMALLY SHELTERED OFFICIALREADINGS. If it weren't located at Lakehurst NAS (and under tighter security), I'd suggest that you, Tony, and one other meteorologist of your choosing do this:

dizzy9479
Ugghhh.........Good Morning America just reported that Lakehurst had an actual temperature of 108 yesterday..........3 degrees higher than Phoenix.
Cary
CBS Evening News just used Lakehurst's HI of 123 to report that it was higher than Death Valley's.
Mitchell Gaines
Here is the latest, as stated before we're well aware of the issue and are trying multiple avenues to have the issue resolved. Thanks for heads up in the form about the national attention KNEL has received. EQUIPMENT...KNEL TEMP DATA IS INACCURATE AND HAS BEEN SINCE ABOUT MARCH 9TH.IT IS RUNNING ABOUT 8 TO 10 DEGREES TOO WARM AND THE PROBLEM ISPARTICULARLY NOTICEABLE DURING DAYTIME HOURS. USE OF THISINFORMATION BY THE NWS WAS SUSPENDED IN EARLY APRIL HERE AT MOUNTHOLLY WHERE WE NO LONGER POSTED THE INFORMATION IN OUR HOURLYWEATHER ROUND UP AND THE TWICE DAILY REGIONAL TEMPERATURE ANDPRECIPITATION SUMMARY SENT AT 815 AM AND PM.WE ARE DEEPLY CONCERNED WITH RECENT MEDIA REPORTS CITING THISERRONEOUS DATA, AND IN SOME CASES ATTRIBUTING IT TO THE NWS. KNEL ISA DOD SITE AND HAS BEEN NOTIFIED MULTIPLE TIMES THAT THEIR DATA ISIN ERROR. NO CORRECTIVE ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN THAT WE ARE AWAREOF.PLEASE BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS WITH THIS DATA SET. THE NWS IN MOUNTHOLLY DOES NOT USE IT. THANK YOU.
Isotherm
The other day Lonnie Quinn of CBS said Lakehurst was the hottest temp in the country. I mean I know he's not a met, but anyone with a brain can see something's up if BLM's 94F and Lakehurst is 108F.
phlwx
It's pretty bad on a number of levels when the NWS has to tell people in AFD's not to use a particular site's data...and it's arguably worse that the DOD is being as pokey about addressing the problem as they are. One would think that just be comparing data between BLM or WRI and NEL you'd get a sense something was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy off.

Eskimo Joe
Goes to show you that many media mets just plug and chug numbers, with little to no analysis. No wonder the field suffers so much.

NaoPos
Why not just take it offline till its fixed?
famartin
Why not just take it offline till its fixed? NEL is not a NWS site. Its on what was once known as the Lakehurst Naval Air Station, now Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, under the responsibility of the Department of Defense. Remember, the primary function of most airport weather stations is to support aviation.
