Stormchaser11
Do you guys use Smoothing for Grlevel3 why or why not? and picture of it if possible.
Eskimo Joe
I only use smoothing if there is an elected official in the Emergency Operations Center who wants to see a picturesque image of a storm. Otherwise, I don't see the use.
icebreaker5221
I occasionally smooth reflectivity just for aesthetic purposes, but you're technically losing some information when you do so. Never do it for velocity tho! It's absolutely necessary to see sharp boundaries to identify tornadoes (and actually in GRLevel3 2.0 you can't smooth velocity any more). It's also not a good idea to do for VIL, as that's associated with very low resolution to begin with.
thunderman
I never use smoothing, it takes away from the real data if you have a good color table. As others have said smoothing VIL and velocity products is always a bad idea.

Shawn
I use smoothing to see the better "hook" sometimes. I use the AWIPS radar profiles and have noticed I can see much more detail without smoothing enabled if I'm interested at looking at potential cells.
