Chicago WX
As we head towards summer, I wanted to throw up a thread regarding summers in Indianapolis. In here I will ramble about various facts and what not, and follow the progress of summer 2013 for IND. First up, the past three summers at IND. All three are in the top 10 all time hottest summers (records since 1871). 1) 78.6º in 1874 2) 78.5º in 1936 3) 78.2º in 1934 4) 78.1º in 2010 5) 77.8º in 2012 6) 77.6º in 2011 7) 77.3º in 1983 7) 77.3º in 1872 9) 77.2º in 1873 10) 76.9º in 1901 Daily records broken or tied are highlighted in the below chart. WestWind
Thanks for the statistics, Chicago_Wx. I lived in VA for the majority of my life before I lived in Indianapolis from 1994 to 2000. I found the summers in Indy to be a lot nicer (in my personal opinion anyway) than in VA. Yeah, it can get just as hot (or hotter) as in VA, but it only stays that way a week or so at a time vs. the weeks on end with lows never falling out of the 70's in VA. My main weather complaint about Indy was lack of snow in winter. Lots of mixed precip but seldom just snow. Now that I live in Buffalo. Summers are nice here. Yet even here the past few summers have been a bit uncomfortable. I have a friend who hosts server rack space in Rochester and was saying how cooling costs the last 2 summers were the highest ever. Usually temperatures drop into the low 60s at night here even in July, but we've had plenty of lows above 70 the past 3 years. Of course, downslope flow from mountains to the southwest of here does contribute late in the season (once lakes are warmed up). This season is definitely starting different from the past 3 years here though. We had snow showers at higher elevations nearby yesterday - something we have not seen in May for a few years. My gut feeling is that we don't see the extremes of heat of the past summer either here or in Indy this year.

beavis1729
I still can't believe July 2012 had a mean of 84.0 in Indianapolis. A +8 monthly surplus in the middle of summer is amazing.
Sidewinder
The last three summers here have been brutally hot. Let's hope we don't put 2013 in that top 10 also.
Chicago WX
2013 was the 16th wettest January-May period in recorded history for Indianapolis. So, I took the top 50 such periods and rolled them forward through Summer. Strict above/below versus longterm averages tilts the summer precipitation to below normal, 28 versus 21 (obviously not counting 2013 yet). I highlighted the recent years, since 2000, on the list as well. 2002, 2005, and 2011 had Summers turn dry...2004, 2006, 2008, and 2009 Summers remained wet. Chicago WX
Along the lines of what Hoosier was discussing in the June thread...here are the years and months where Indianapolis has hit 100º+ and various precipitation totals (Jan-May, Spring, Summer, and monthly). Data is from 1897 to current. Bottom line is dry certainly dominates, but there are some wet times that had 100º+ temps as well.
Chicago WX
Above normal Mays and the following Summer in Indianapolis, based off the median May temp of 63.1º (+0.5 to -0.5º considered normal range). I highlighted the Mays that were within one degree, either way, of 2013. Highlighted orange category Summer monthly temps: June temps: 11 above...10 below...3 normal July temps: 10 above...9 below...5 normal August temps: 9 above...9 below...6 normal In other words, it's a crapshoot via this "method". Chicago WX
Does this mean six months from now we will be taking about 80 degree temps at the end of January? I hope so. Well, there's only been 4 days in recorded history that have broken 70º in January (last time was Jan 24, 1967 with a 70º)...so you might have to lower your expectations a touch.
