I actually got 622.8" for BOS which is 47.9"...hardly a difference, but to be exact. I know there's a few errors on the BOX site...the biggest ones being 2003-2004 winter (35.1 listed vs 39.4 in actual) and 2002-2003 (67.7 listed vs 71.3 in actual) but those add up to more than our differences.

I'm surprised Long Island averages more than Central Park (by like 30% too)...that to me would be like Cape Cod averaging more than Taunton/BOX or something.

Same latitude but sticking out over the water to the east....or is that LI average more a function of some luck with recent storm tracks? What's the long term climo between Long Island and spots around NYC?

I just always assume that in the northeast, two spots on the same latitude and similar elevation, the one further west will average more snow.

The 10 inch difference over the last 13 years is mostly a function of luck...the Upton mean after 65 years is 31.67"...<see link>

That's still a bit higher than Central Park.

I think the urban heat island plays such a huge role in NYC compared to suburban locations, and places farther out on the Island are actually at slightly higher latitude, as well as closer to coastal lows, due to the slant of LI.

Ahh the UHI. Conceptually I can't see Long Island averaging more snow than areas to the west on the mainland. It goes against most general climate rules in the northeast...in that snowfall increases as you head away from the coast westward...not increasing as you head east out over the water.

Anyone have like a average annual snowfall map for OKX's CWA while we are talking about this?

NYC's 30 year 1980-2010 average is underdone compared to their "true" average, I think most will agree. NYC's average is 26.7" for the period 1981-2011, LGA's is 27.8", and Newark is 29.5". Further SW in New Brunswick / Middlesex /  Monmouth, I have 29.0" for 1980-2010 and my current running 30 year normal is 29.4". New Brunswick is 28.8". NYC's still catching up from the horrible luck in the 80s. NYC's 1980s average was 19.7", while New Brunswick's 80s average was 27.5", a significant difference.

So I think NYC's "true" average is around 28.0-28.5". LGA very similar. Newark and New Brunswick / areas just W-SW of NYC are 29.0-29.5". Then the 30"+ area begins about 15 miles west of NYC.

NYC's slightly lower average compared to locations SW of them is likely due in part to cumulative effects of UHI on marginal snowfall events over the years. As far as NYC versus LI, as William pointed out, the slightly higher latitude in conjunction with more favorable positioning for Miller B's, give them an average 2-4" higher. Miller B's and redevelopers have been quite frequent around here over the past 15-20 years.

Northern LI has latitude on NYC as had been pointed out. Also the geography does matter some with the snowfall...like if you go straight west from the western Cape and around EWB over to SE CT (about 10 miles inland for equivalanet latitude), the former averages more snow than the latter. You get about 30-35" per year vs high 20s despite the Cape/EWB being further east.
