Damage In Tolland
We obviously have our hot days, but talk to any native and they'll tell you our cool periods are why the summers here are so nice. Since you are from NJ, I would not expect you to understand.Just like none of us here would want to live in a place that was cold and snowed year round, I don't think any of us mind HHH wx from time to time. It's a perfect area of the country to experience all types of wx. If we wanted snow all year, we'd move to the fjords in Norway. If we wanted HHH we'd move to Rico. We want to experience all types of wx, so we live here.

I honestly know few people who prefer something like a DC summer.

Sugarloaf1989
Our summers are not very hot and humid climatologically in comparison to most of the country. In the CT valley they do get some of that but even BDL still only averages 19 days of 90F+ per summer. ORH averages 3, PVD 10, and BOS averages 8. Last year there where 4 day's with 90F + here in my area.

A man of extremes. I guess I like cooler wx overall. Not to mention the most violent places in the world are warm wx countries. We cooler wx people are peaceful. I honestly know few people who prefer something like a DC summer. I don't know anyone that prefers a brutal hot summer, lol. And we do have more choices on where we live than people think...it's just a pain in the arse to move, but if you really wanted to you could before your kid gets into school. And I personally would do snow all year round if I could...or at least in nearby mountains where you can easily visit it, haha. Actually I'd rather just get so much snow in the winter that it lasts through the summer like spots in Alaska or Norway, haha.
Sugarloaf1989
It's a beautiful sunny day today and my Bradford Pear is finally blossoming: All other tree's with the exception of Red Maple seed are still dormant.

Quincy
it is April 30th... Perhaps the turn around from nothing to green. I don't have any specific dates, but I really feel like the whole greening process is a LOT later than usual. I'm sure the perspective is just skewed because of the early start we had last year. Damage In Tolland
The leaves are coming out here. Surprised so quick.Yeah the last 2-3 days things really popped here. Today is the first day you can see tiny green on the Oak buds. The soil temps must finally have come up with the nights staying in the 40's

I'd say we're a little late vs climo here, but not all that much-maybe a week behind.
Sugarloaf1989
The Oaks are just tickling out some tiny green today on the buds. All species are starting to come out now Birch are stark bare here, with no buds, one of my sugar maples has buds, but only on south facing branches, while the other two smaller ones have nothing. Everything is about 7-10 days behind. Full leaf out looks to be about May 7-10th.
ORH_wxman
Leaf out is definitely going to end up about a solid 8-10 days behind usual I think when all it said and done. 2010 and last year saw it a solid 10 days ahead of climo. Maybe even a bit more in 2010.

Typhoon Tip
We all have our own ideas, and there probably is some veracious science out there should we care enough to look where the averages are derived ... But it seems to me this year is smack on schedule for this part of Mass -- between Acton and Ayer. The last 3 years were ahead of schedule, and this year has returned to normal. The vast majority of years growing up in this are, we really needed to get past April 20 for the buds to seriously crack, which was spot on this time. Today the sugar maple flowers are in full blown with infant leafs coming out -- if memory serves it really only takes a week for the leafs to really expand going forward so it will be interesting to see where this is on May 7. ORH_wxman
I found stuff that uses remote sensing to help gauge the onset of leaf-out. One technique uses satellites/remote sensing that came up with an average date for when at least half of the leaf canopy had been developed...they used that as the benchmark for "onset of leaf-out". For HFD metro the average date is about April 20th. For BOS metro, it is more like April 27th. This was based on data from 1984-2002...and the UHI areas are the earliest vs even just right outside the cities. I'm not sure what HFD looks like right now but I can say for certain staring out my window at work in Boston right now that we haven't reached half of the leaf canopy developed. Really not that close. So I suspect this year will finish at least a week late.

ORH_wxman
Scott that looks like well under 50% to me...some species are barely budded and even the maples haven't fully leafed out yet. Their definition was at least half of the canopy was to mature leaf-out. Though I suspect it is hard to envision what 100% looks like when we've been staring at 0% for the last 6 months. Boston Common out my window looks less impressive than your pics though...but it has def come a long way from even 5-6 days ago. It'll prob be there in another few days.
