skowee Posted April 17, 2013 Share Posted April 17, 2013 Wow, lot of water locked up in frozen form over the Dakota's. The Red River of the North is looking to have its latest spring flood on record. Fargo Forum reports they've reopened Sandbag Central to make an additional 500,000 sandbags so the city will have a grand total of 1.8 million when the waters start to rise. North of Grand Forks (near Oslo, MN) the slope of the river becomes even more flat (if that's possible to believe). If they get a rapid warmup and/or fast river rises I'm sure ice jams will be a problem. USGS webcam on the Red at Grand Forks is still completely ice covered. Yeah you can tell where that river gradient becomes even more flat, from a geologic standpoint you look for increased meanders in the river channel and that's exactly what you see near Oslo. Winnipeg had the right idea building the floodway system. Definitely will be interesting to watch the meltdown. Devil's Lake in ND will continue to rise. blizznd Posted April 17, 2013 Share Posted April 17, 2013 I live in east grand forks minnesota and drive over the Red and Red Lake rivers many times a day and yes rivers are snowcovered and completely frozen..... will take some time before any breakup.....but once we can get some 45 degree days and 32 degree nights it can occur pretty fast as it melts from the bank inward..... New outlook puts Fargo at a 50% chance exceeding 40.3 feet and a 40% chance of tying the 2009 record crest at 40.8 feet. More details with more forecast points in the Red River basin available here.
