famartin
Information disseminated from the Air Traffic Controllers union says they intend to close all the contract weather observing stations at airports, including EWR, JFK, LGA and ISP. I have a thread about it on the main board... http://www.americanwx.com/bb/index.php/topic/39847-faa-plans-to-terminate-contract-weather-observer-program/ Closure date per what the ATC Union has circulated is June 15th for ISP, July 15th for LGA and EWR, and July 31st for JFK. earthlight
It would be a real shame if this came to pass. I remember hearing about this a while back, too. Can't believe it's gotten this far without enough resistance to stop it.
Sampson
I guess ag3's spot at the entrance of LGA will become the new unofficial/ official observation area. Expect a highly anomalous increase in snow totals 'cause payback's a b**ch. In all seriousness, this is sad in so many levels, and really hard to believe. You'd think that they would figure out something to save these places, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards anymore. Damn shame!

My Astoria measurements are always spot on with a blend of Knyc and Klga.

No need to qualify your measurements (I wouldn't want to get any weird pictures ) I was just trying to have a little fun with a bad situation. Sundog
What a bunch of garbage. So there won't be any more measurements taken at the airports? What will we use as our official climate record? Only Central Park?

Only Central Park? From what I've heard, there will be observations still posted but it will be up to the control tower workers, not the contract observers anymore. What this means is that there'll probably will be no more snowfall measurements taken, and there will be some poorly written METARs by people who aren't trained. There could be some serious unsettling setbacks because of this.

Officially this hasn't even been announced yet, though apparently FAA has told the Air Traffic Controllers union that this is where they WANT to go (i.e., cutting the program) and that's why all the controllers need ob training. NWS has a program called snow-paid which provides payments to observers near the airports so that they measure snowfall on the 6-hour schedule, where FAA observers aren't taking the obs. Mt. Holly uses it for all of their sites; I think Taunton also uses it for some of their sites. However, rumors circulating indicate that the funding for that program may also get the axe. I suppose they could get volunteers...
