Chicago WX
Thought we needed a contest for the warm months, so I decided to put together one for the total number of 90º+ temperatures for May though September...using one city/site for every NWS office in the region. We'll use the over/under format for this contest, like the snowfall edition. Using the 1981-2010 normals, rounded up or down by me, you pick over or under or exact for the total amount of 90º+ days in May through September for each city/site. Deadline is April 30 at 8:00pm ET. Official entry form Chicago IL (ORD): 14 days Moline IL (MLI): 20 days Springfield IL (SPI): 23 days Fort Wayne IN (FWA): 13 days Indianapolis IN (IND): 15 days Des Moines IA (DSM): 18 days Sioux City IA (SUX): 20 days Louisville KY (SDF): 37 days Paducah KY (PAH): 42 days Alpena MI (APN): 5 days Detroit MI (DTW): 10 days Grand Rapids MI (GRR): 8 days Marquette MI (MQT): 3 days Duluth MN (DLH): 2 days Minneapolis MN (MSP): 11 days Kansas City MO (MCI): 32 days Springfield MO (SGF): 35 days St. Louis MO (STL): 38 days Cleveland OH (CLE): 9 days Columbus OH (CMH): 15 days Green Bay WI (GRB): 3 days La Crosse WI (LSE): 13 days Milwaukee WI (MKE): 7 days Tiebreaker questions #1: 90º+ days in June for Moline IL (MLI)...over/under/exact 4 days #2: 90º+ days in July for Kansas City (MCI)...over/under/exact 12 days #3: 100º+ days in August for St. Louis MO (STL)...over/under/exact 1 day #4: number of times Hoosier talks about or posts a NAM (includes 4km NAM) or RAP temperature map in June-August...over/under/exact 50 times A couple of charts to possibly assist your entries. First one is the 1981-2010 normal 90º+ days for each site, by month. Second chart is the May-September total amount of 90º+ days for every year from 2000 to 2012. Is the trend your friend? Stebo
Curious to hear your thoughts on why you think it's going to be a torchy summer? There just hasn't been enough drought relief this spring thus far and for many parts of the area the systems we have been getting have been under performing compared to QPF for the last few months, it could change over the next month or so but right now I am a bit skeptical. The last month cut back considerable gains many in the region had through the winter, sure there were a few areas that ended up near to slightly above normal in the region but not that many. Plus it is hard to argue the last 12 years on average have been above normal in the summers, so I am hedging my bet in that direction as well. IWXwx
A big lol to both the subtitle and to tiebreaker #4. I have fish calling my name this morning, but I'll make some picks later. I can't believe that EVERY reporting station will be over, but it could be a very warm summer.

I can't believe that EVERY reporting station will be over, but it could be a very warm summer. Yeah I mean it is tough to pick what might end up being under, if there was ever a place it would probably be in the far NE part of the region, Alpena or Toronto (though not listed for the contest)

Hoosier
Need an entry from you, even though I know you don't do contests. Eh, I'll enter one for you. Chalk above it is. I'm really not sure what to expect this summer. Haven't spent much time looking at stuff. The source regions out west are still in pretty significant drought so perhaps it heightens the chances of intense heat spilling eastward at times but it might be tough to pull off the extremes like we saw last year. Geos
I'm thinking the core of the heat will be in the western most areas of the subforum and further west this summer - closer to the drought areas. Keeping my fingers crossed that the drought doesn't resurge eastwards and create something close to last summer.

I know this is a regional contest, but strictly talking 90F+ days this statement is extremely skewed by the last 3 years (particularly the last 2). It is a fact that the 2000s saw the LEAST 90F+ days at Detroit of any decade since the 1920s! # of 90F+ days each decade 1900s 56 1910s 107 1920s 100 1930s 172 1940s 160 1950s 154 1960s 111 1970s 119 1980s 127 1990s 123 2000s 102 2010s 70 Just 3 years into this decade, we have seen 70% of the 90F days we saw the previous 10-years, so we are definitely due for a dud of a year in the 90F department.
