Ian
People really seemed to enjoy this one so figured it was worth a share here (semi-spam maybe) http://www.ustornadoes.com/2013/04/03/looking-back-at-the-april-3-4-1974-super-outbreak/
Teru Teru Bozu
That's a very interesting article, thanks for posting! It's interesting to think about what we would have learned about the Super Outbreak had it occurred today, with the technology we have now. Of the 148 tornadoes recorded, only 35% of them were rated as weak (F0 or F1). By comparison, the outbreak of April 25-28, 2011 spawned 358 known tornadoes, over 70% of those being rated as weak, which is closer to the proportion of all tornadoes that are thought to be weak - and undoubtedly, many of those would have never been surveyed and counted had it not been for Doppler-indicated TVS's. It makes you wonder just how many tornadoes there really were in 1974. By any measure, 30 F4/F5 tornadoes in 24 hours is just ridiculous. Is Tanner, Alabama the only town to have experienced 3 F5/EF5 tornadoes? (two in the Super Outbreak and another in April 2011)
wxdude64
Thanks for this Ian, hard to believe next year will be 30 year anniversary of this event! My Grandparents lived in Rainelle, WV in Greenbrier County, WV, I can remember the hurried rush my parents where in to get to them that next morning and passing through some of the damage between Sam Black Church and Crawley, WV on our way there.
