Forsythia roared out yesterday finally.

Deep deep green grass. Week or 2 till first mowing FTW

Thats incredible, what a different place, granted I put some radioactive chemicals on mine to test out a bit, but just got done mowing and finishing the rest tomorrow.

Lush and Green, lush and green.

My lawn is a money pit. To have it landscaped set us back nearly 1g/month, so that quite wasn't working out. lol. I could only imagine what it would cost to apply that stuff over 3 acres over the course of a full season...probably would cost more than landscaping. I don't like using chemicals like that anyway-- especially with our reservoirs nearby.

I think I'm just going to start a big tree growing campaign this year. I would like to reclaim at least an acre  if I could. That would definitely cut a lot of the time spent mowing. lol

LOL--you can grow an acre of trees to balance the acre I freed up from them last spring.

Does anyone have a solution (short of digging out the entire area) for getting rid of Japanese Knot Weed?  That stuff just sucks.  It had grown unimpeded for Lord knows how many years in the area that I have since cleared.  I have lawn in the area now, but it still grows there--at that ridiculously obscene rate.  I might go into a few times a week mowing regimen in the area to keep it in check.  But any ideas short of digging up the whole area for irradication would be welcomed.

Meanwhile, things are greening up at long last.  Some areas have yet to have any chloraphyll, but that'll change daily I'm sure.

I have a question for you lawn guru's, specifically CT Blizz. My front yard was badly infested with crabgrass last year and I want to prevent that this year. I have alot of dead crabgrass that over wintered and covers a good part of my front yard.

My questions are, do I remove the dead crabgrass and then put down crabgrass preventer? Will crabgrass preventer even work since the crabgrass probably laid down seed? When should I apply any treatment?

Thanks

Its still early enough to put down the preventer. But my ? is, do you have any other grass there or is it all weeds and crabgrass? If it is, you should rip all that stuff out of there and reseed the entire area and put down starter fert for the new seedlings. Then the preventer can go down once you've mowed the new grass 3-4 times. If there's just some crabgrass mixed in among good grass then you don't need to go to that extreme.

The yard is about 50% grass at this point, scattered around the front lawn which is about 3/4 acre in size.. If I put down crabgrass preventer will that prevent it on a lawn that already had an infestation?

Thats a pretty big problem area. I'm afraid if you put down just preventer it will come back to some degree unless you use some really good stuff. What I would do is rake:rip out the dead crabgrass , leaving the good grass and oversees the area , put down starter fert and then do preventer once new seed is established and mowed a few x

i had a lawn that was mostly crabgrass (CG) when i bought my home 10 years ago and managed to eliminate it over time. I don't disagree with anything posted but would add the following. it will take time to eliminate the CG. i would suggest this approach it worked for me. thatch the lawn now (rent a thatcher from HD or lowes). this should get rid of most of the established crabgrass in your lawn. make sure you rake up whatever is pulled up by the thatcher. i would put down the crabgrass preventer when the time comes and wait till the fall to plant new grass. if you plant the new grass now it may be too late to put halts down once the lawn is  established. in the fall you can rent an overseeder from HD or lowes (buy lots or seed). you will need to use the halts everyspring. the crabgrass seed can remain in your lawn for years.

I agree, it will take some time and effort to get rid of the crabgrass totally so don't get discouraged if you still get some crabgrass come up even though you put preventer down.  I'd recommend using the hose attachement weed killer with crabgrass killer when it does pop up again in the summer.  A few years ago it was hard to find crabgrass killer in the hose attachements but its now readily available.  Sure you may wind up with some bare spots after you kill the crabgrass but IMO thats better than litting the crabgrass run wild.  Then you can't beat seeding in the early fall, its the best time to do it.

What a gorgeous morning garden and lawn lovers!!!!  I just took a walk around the yard and most plants are well on there way, especially echinacea pururea, nepeta cataria, perovskia atriplicifolia, dianthus barbatus, hemerocallis, binomical nomenclatura, syringa vulgaris and cornus florida!!!

I got a few annuals the other day to add splashes of color to a few pots and perennial gardens, next week its time to fill in the oak whiskey barrels and mulch the gardens for Mothers day with sweet peat.  Third mow of the year on friday..............get out there and enjoy nature!!!

GO GO GO

I just put down 15,000SQF of Vigoro 5M Crabgrass And Lawn Fertilizer, so we'll see how that goes.

good luck, don't dig up your lawn now. the halts seal your lawn, if you break the seal, crabgrass will apear at that spot

Sometime within the next 7-10 days, the worst season begins - Lawn mowing season. Man, do I dispise cutting and trimming the property.

What? That's one of the top two or three best things in life. Mowing on the tractor and trimming and then sitting back when you're done and admiring how nice the lawn looks. Only thing better is shovelling snow and admiring the banks upon completion.

You are a sick, sick person. Nothing is worse than mowing.

I mean tractor. I dunno....many other things I'd rather do than mow on a hot day.

Well who mows at high noon on a hot day? I have a buddy who is a prison guard who drinks a minimum of 12 beers per mowing on his tractor. I nearly fell down laughing when he told me that, he's a big dude , like 275lbs. But still , his yard isn't that big
