SJonesWX
The pool is progressing. There will be some significantly large areas that will have been transformed in some way or another. One commonality is none of them will have grass yet. Is there any benefit of putting down seed at this time of year (in a few weeks) or am I better off just waiting for spring? Thanks. i would put it down now. you may not see much growth, but it should come right up in the spring. i would use a slit-seeder to get the seed into the soil. if you don't do that, at least lightly rake it in. if you seed in the spring, it might be too late to ward off the weeds. moneypitmike
If you get it down today it COULD germinate before the freeze late next week/weekend. Freezes don't hurt new seedlings anyway. If the area gets a lot of sun..you can do it now..though it is getting pretty late to expect much growth. It's tricky i would put it down now. you may not see much growth, but it should come right up in the spring. i would use a slit-seeder to get the seed into the soil. if you don't do that, at least lightly rake it in. if you seed in the spring, it might be too late to ward off the weeds. Thanks for the input. Unfortnatleyl, it's not in a position to be seeded yet. I think that will be at least a week out. All told it will be several hundred square feet that need it, so I'm hesitant to blow a lot of money on seed that won't do anything. Would you suggest using a "by November" deadline before punting to spring? If there's a freeze, punt?

CoastalWx
Maybe next Sunday night so you have 8-9 days. Even so you can still grow the grass after.

Not saying you can't do it but you'll be competing with weeds in the Spring if you decide to seed than.

If there's a freeze, punt? if you have the money, sod it... we get our sod for .25 a sq ft...a pallet usually contains 600 sqft which cost 150 bucks. You can lay sod down at anytime. Would you suggest using a "by November" deadline before punting to spring? If there's a freeze, punt? As you may recall I had new leaching fields installed last winter and spring seeded on May 1. Ideally, I would have waited until this fall, but the location of the mess was in the most used area of my yard, so dirt all spring/summer wasn't an option. By mid august I had 80% crab grass, the 20% real grass was in the shaded areas. I killed the crab in late august and overseeded, limed, and fert in mid september. If I were you, I would throw some perennial rye down asap and assess it in the spring. Maybe enough comes in to allow you to wait until next fall. Bottom line, spring seeding is basically a waste of money imo...
grinch1989
Here's a photo of where the pipeline was run from the septic tank to the fields. This was lush green late may. This photo is from late august after the crab killer did its job. Those tall light green blades of grass were a bonus! Spring seeding FTL
moneypitmike
Thanks for the many responses--seems the consensus is put down seed. I'm going to avoid sod--I've heard too many stories of that having only a limitied shelf life.

It's instant grass. We do very little seeding down here, its mainly sod.

I wonder how the cold two nights ago might have put a halt on your growth for the year..... Appears that neither you nor any of the neighboring homes in the shot have any leaves on the ground. I suspect Kevin applauds your keeping on top of that!
amarshall
Turned the irrigation off last night for the winter. My overseeding has really taken off.

Still trying to get some last bit to grow a bit more. I had just cut it so all the leaves were removed. Mostly Maples, Birch. i have more Oaks and those are still a few weeks off. The neighbors across the street are more open than I am and don't get as much leaves. I'll put down my winterizer in a couple more weeks.
tombo82685
Spent about 2 hours on the front and side part of my yard spot spraying, chickweed, dandelions, virginia copperleaf, and black medic yesterday afternoon with confront. Grass seed i planted before the rains is germinating well down here.

If so, then you should be fine, shows the plants still have a response to the sun, fertilizer and what not. I haven't looked at your weather, but have you had rain recently? You don't want to put a weed killer down if your turf is stressed.

tombo82685
it actually does look like that, but i have not seen the long things that are growing upwards probably becaue you mow frequently, doesn't have enough time to seed out.

Baroclinic Zone
ok thanks. do you think the spray stuff they sell at home depot will kill that? Any broadleaf herbicide should work on it. You can go with the selective kind that won't kill the surrounding grass or you can you a broad spectrum herbicide which will kill everything it touches.
