Mountain West Discussion

Yeah, seems like there has been a force field around my neck of the plains deflecting everything one way or the other the past 3 weeks. APA (Centennial CO) has recorded 0.43 inches of rain this month, roughly 25% of normal. Of course, my parents are coming into town today, ensuring heavy rain for the weekend. :)

Yesterday Fort Collins had a high of 78 and 0.14" of rain. There was some thunder.  Our mountains got around 0.5" in some spots (Radar from FTG showed up to 1")  Fort Collins has 1.55" for this month, which is close to normal.  I took a drive to Denver last night. The grass out there is definitely looking dry, perhaps showing the effects of the continued drought from last year.

There were many reports of hail in Cheyenne yesterday. I imagine that there were some noticeable dents on cars all over town. That supercell really cranked on Cheyenne.

I think we could be in a time period of several days of isolated severe weather in this area, with some medium jet stream winds in the area. We already had 4 severe weather days in a row (if you count 7/25)

We could have some supercells near the Front Range cities today. Dew points and precipitable water are fairly decent for this area. 0-6km shear is about 30 knots right now. (500mb wind only 10-20 knots though) As per SPC mesoanalysis, there is 3500 J/kg of CAPE in Weld County (even 1:00PM), all the way to the New Mexico border. That is a lot of CAPE for this region of the country. Somebody around here is going to get hail today.

Denver/Boulder discussion

.UPDATE...CURRENT FORECAST ALREADY MENTIONS QUITE A BIT OF WEATHER
THIS AFTERNOON...AND ALL THE NECESSARY INGREDIENTS SEEM TO BE
COMING TOGETHER. DEW POINTS ON THE EASTERN PLAINS ARE IN THE MID
AND UPPER 60S WITH SOUTHEASTERLY SURFACE WINDS THAT WILL HELP HOLD
THE MOISTURE CLOSER TO THE FOOTHILLS. SKIES OVER THE I-25 CORRIDOR
ARE SUNNY...ALLOWING FOR STRONG SOLAR HEATING THROUGH THE NEXT FEW
HOURS. MODEL SOUNDINGS CONTINUE TO INDICATE CAPE VALUES OF
1000-1500 J/KG WILL DEVELOP DURING THE AFTERNOON. SATELLITE
IMAGERY SHOWS A BATCH OF CLOUDINESS OVER THE WEST SLOPE AND
EASTERN UTAH WHICH SHOULD BE WEAK UPPER IMPULSE THAT IS EXPECTED
TO CROSS OVER NORTHEAST COLORADO DURING THE AFTERNOON. THE
FORECAST PACKAGE DOES NOT APPEAR TO REQUIRE ANY TWEAKING AT THIS
POINT...SO NO UPDATES WILL BE FORTHCOMING.

&&

.AVIATION...NO CHANGES TO PREVIOUS THINKING. STRONG HEATING
THROUGH MIDDAY SHOULD GIVE WAY TO INCREASING CLOUDS THROUGH THE
AFTERNOON AND CEILINGS DROPPING TO ABOUT 6000 FEET AGL WITH
THUNDERSTORMS THAT DEVELOP. GUSTY OUTFLOW WINDS FROM THE MODERATE
RAIN SHOWERS SHOULD BE EXPECTED.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...MID-LEVEL WINDS WILL BE WEAK THIS AFTERNOON...10-15
KNOTS OUT OF THE WEST. SLOW MOVING STORM MOTIONS WILL BE POSSIBLE
WITH SHOWERS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING UP TO AN INCH OF RAIN IN 30-45
MINUTES. IF SHOWERS MOVE OVER BURN SCARS THEN FLOODING WILL BE
POSSIBLE. ON THE PLAINS...LOCALIZED URBAN FLOOD PROBLEMS MAY
DEVELOP FROM RAINFALLS OF ONE-HALF TO ONE INCH IN AN HOUR OR LESS.

first tornado watch for Larimer County in a long time. I have not seen anything regarding a confirmed tornado, but I have definitely seen some strong rotation on radar. I downloaded the GRLevel2AE 21-day trial yesterday. I guess that was a good day to download it. I am seeing max hail size 3.54" in north Larimer County. If that gets close to me, I will have to protect my car somehow.

It was in one of the NWS statements earlier. Central Morgan County, I believe.

yeah. Wind gusts were about 30mph ish.  It was sort of an attempt at an RFD anyway. FTG radar shows we got 1.0" in  a half hour... so I would believe between 0.5" and 1.0" in a half hour.

AT 430 PM MDT...A CONFIRMED TORNADO BRIEFLY TOUCHED DOWN 5 MILES
  NORTH OF MILLIKEN...OR 5 MILES WEST OF GREELEY...NEAR HIGHWAY 34
  AND 83RD AVENUE. THE STORM WAS MOVING SOUTHEAST AT 15 MPH. THIS
  STORM COULD PRODUCE ADDITIONAL TORNADOES AT ANY TIME.
