mayjawintastawm
Yeah, seems like there has been a force field around my neck of the plains deflecting everything one way or the other the past 3 weeks. APA (Centennial CO) has recorded 0.43 inches of rain this month, roughly 25% of normal. Of course, my parents are coming into town today, ensuring heavy rain for the weekend. tacoman25
Moderate rain and thunder here in Boulder.
Chinook
Yesterday Fort Collins had a high of 78 and 0.14" of rain. There was some thunder. Our mountains got around 0.5" in some spots (Radar from FTG showed up to 1") Fort Collins has 1.55" for this month, which is close to normal. I took a drive to Denver last night. The grass out there is definitely looking dry, perhaps showing the effects of the continued drought from last year.

Chinook
There were many reports of hail in Cheyenne yesterday. I imagine that there were some noticeable dents on cars all over town. That supercell really cranked on Cheyenne. I think we could be in a time period of several days of isolated severe weather in this area, with some medium jet stream winds in the area. We already had 4 severe weather days in a row (if you count 7/25)
Chinook
There's a tornado warned storm on I-70 around Deer Trail. I wonder if this one is blowing any trucks off the freeway with straight line or tornado winds.
mayjawintastawm
LSR said hail up to 1.25" and a bunch of straight line wind damage reports to non-moving objects, estimated 65-80 mph. No tornado reports though. You can bet the truckers had both hands on the wheel for that one!
Chinook
We could have some supercells near the Front Range cities today. Dew points and precipitable water are fairly decent for this area. 0-6km shear is about 30 knots right now. (500mb wind only 10-20 knots though) As per SPC mesoanalysis, there is 3500 J/kg of CAPE in Weld County (even 1:00PM), all the way to the New Mexico border. That is a lot of CAPE for this region of the country. Somebody around here is going to get hail today. Chinook
a few storms popping on the instability axis in Morgan County. The first severe thunderstorm warnings should be soon.
Chinook
I am already seeing large hail indicators in Larimer County and Morgan County. Some rotation on storms north and south of Fort Morgan.
Chinook
tornado warning for both circulations near Fort Morgan. Looks like a strong circulaton at tilt 1.3deg.
Chinook
Another radar-indicated tornado warning at Last Chance, CO. hole in the storm at tilt 3.2 degrees. Looks like this is at least a strong low-level or mid-level rotation.
tacoman25
Yeah, at least one confirmed tornado out on the plains, and big-time hail/flash flooding with the storm up by WY border the past hour. Storms are just fizzling out around here so far.
Chinook
first tornado watch for Larimer County in a long time. I have not seen anything regarding a confirmed tornado, but I have definitely seen some strong rotation on radar. I downloaded the GRLevel2AE 21-day trial yesterday. I guess that was a good day to download it. I am seeing max hail size 3.54" in north Larimer County. If that gets close to me, I will have to protect my car somehow. tacoman25
Looks like a couple very strong cells drifting southeast just north and east of Fort Collins now. Big-time hail and maybe developing a hook? Looks like Windsor is about to get hit and then probably Greeley.
Chinook
closest tornado warning to me in a few years. This should stay north/east of Fort Collins.
Chinook
seems like a hook echo near I-25 and the Budweiser plant (mountain vista dr) or Mulberry(highway 14)
mayjawintastawm
That western cell near Fort Collins is taking a sharp right turn. I wonder if the east side of town will get hammered. Nothing here except outflow winds from various directions and an 8 degree temp drop. I would be happy with any precip right now <2" in size... tacoman25
Looks like the cells are merging and forming one massive storm. Rapid development to the south. Chinook can you see much from your location? Pics?
tacoman25
Sounds like there were multiple confirmed tornadoes out east per the NWS: THUNDERSTORMS ALONG A THERMAL BOUNDARY IN MORGAN AND SOUTHERN WASHINGTON PRODUCED A FEW TORNADOES IN THE PAST HOUR. tacoman25
Wow...storm just blew up right over Fort Collins. I'm thinking widespread and costly hail damage with this one. The Front Range was due for something like this.
Chinook
the RFD hit me, but I didn't see anything severe. Just a couple of pea-size hail stones. I was quite concerned. Now I'm quite concerned for some other cities around here.

Chinook
yeah. Wind gusts were about 30mph ish. It was sort of an attempt at an RFD anyway. FTG radar shows we got 1.0" in a half hour... so I would believe between 0.5" and 1.0" in a half hour. AT 430 PM MDT...A CONFIRMED TORNADO BRIEFLY TOUCHED DOWN 5 MILES NORTH OF MILLIKEN...OR 5 MILES WEST OF GREELEY...NEAR HIGHWAY 34 AND 83RD AVENUE. THE STORM WAS MOVING SOUTHEAST AT 15 MPH. THIS STORM COULD PRODUCE ADDITIONAL TORNADOES AT ANY TIME.
Chinook
Radar image from 2230 (430PM) the + is the approximate location of the tornado (5 WSW Greeley). Looks like this is at a farm field.

tacoman25
Just watched the severe-warned storm in Boulder County pass just to my north. Had a great view of it from my backyard, took some pics I'll post in a bit. So far just very windy here, no rain or hail.
