Wow, Colorado State University is closing at noon due to the snow (where I work).  They don't close up all that often, really speaks to the power of this storm!

Nice.

The second part of this storm is having trouble getting traction here. It's been snowing lightly to occasionally moderately since about 7 am, but only about 1.5" additional accumulation so far, and nothing sticking to the main roads yet. Hopefully this afternoon things will pick up.

On Monday, CU closed at 2PM. It kind of backfired as I think the worst road conditions were around that time. By 5ish, everything was just wet. Right now, it's continuing to dump in Boulder and the temperature is down to 23. I'm sure my drive home in the canyon will be interesting.

Ended up with 3" yesterday, so 17" total from this complex storm system. Also had my latest sub-freezing low since I've lived here with a high of 31 yesterday. The low of 15 this morning was also my coldest this late, by far.

DEN had a new record low max of 30 yesterday, previous record being 35 from 1999. The low of 14 this morning is the coldest low this late since 1966, and only misses being the coldest temperature this late by 2 days.

-6.8 departure for the month so far for DEN.

Other notable stats from the region:

- Cheyenne, WY has now recorded 27.9" of snow this month, making 2013 the snowiest April since 1984 and the 4th snowiest on record (data back to 1915)

- The high of 22 yesterday at Casper, WY is their coldest high on record this late. This comes after their high of 13 on the 9th, which is also their coldest high on record that late and their coldest high ever in the month of April.

- The 30.5" of snow Casper has recorded this month makes it their 3rd snowiest April and snowiest since 1984

- The low of 5 that Greeley, CO saw on 4/10 was their coldest temperature on record that late, next coldest being 8 in 1920 (records back to 1893). The low of 12 this morning is their second coldest temperature on record for this late.

- The high of 36 yesterday at Pueblo, CO was their second coldest high this late on record

- The high of 12 at Rawlins, WY on 4/9 was their coldest high on record after 3/27, and the high of 20 yesterday was their second coldest high on record this late (records back to 1951)

Nice info...crazy stuff.

Also, Laramie WY hit -3 this morning.  I believe that's their latest sub-zero temp on record.

The records from the WRCC show that Laramie hit -2 on 4/20/66, so that would be their latest sub-zero. But the -3 yesterday was indeed their coldest temperature this late.

NWS released the totals from the snow this week- I think data was from COCORAHS. I was surprised to see the water equivalent totals- even we got 0.8-1" judging from readings around us. Many places >2". More soaked in than I thought- will be good. I think our snow total was somewhere around 9", with most of it being light fluff but probably a lot melting on the snow board. Impossible to measure. I don't currently have a good rain gauge.

I think I got 21" at my house. It was 10" on Monday, 6" on Tuesday, and 5" on Wednesday. The CSU official measurements have 23.9" for this month, and we had 1.5" from the previous week, so I guess that makes it 22.4" for this storm. The 18z GFS from Sunday actually got the precip total close! 51mm is equal to 2.0". We likely had 1.6" to 2.0" of water equivalent. Check out my picture of a layer of brown snow down on the ground- somehow my neighborhood got a layer of brown snow near the top of the snow pack.

I would imagine that has to be one of the biggest April snowstorms on record for the Fort Collins area? Maybe even top 5 for overall storms any month? The records I see from the WRCC show this is the snowiest April for Fort Collins since 1983 - with more snow expected Mon night/Tue.

The frontal passage in Boulder this morning was awesome. Watching the dark clouds slam into Bear Peak and seeing the uplift in action was a real treat.

If you looked at the radar right now you'd swear there was a huge lake to the west of Boulder County. This is some band we've been in.

The snow is really cranking in Fort Collins again, wow!  Very low visibility.

By the way, I heard the reason for the dirty snow was a large dust storm in the Four Corners area that was sucked up by the storm as it came in.  I imagine it led to the snow melting a bit quicker otherwise.

Should be a nice frontal passage in the TX panhandle too.  Some locations were near 90F this afternoon, and may be sub-freezing by tomorrow morning.

Yeah it is 1/2" to 1" per hour here.  A small amount of slush is building up on pavement. The banding reminds me of lake effect snow.

Driving home through Aurora reminded me of springtime LES in upstate NY when I was little. 1/4 mile visibility, then 4 miles away broken clouds, then 4 miles more back to moderate to heavy snow. Wow!

Ended up with about 5" this time around, about 8" where I work in Boulder.

Some more impressive record cold, too:

  • DEN reached 19 this morning, making it their latest temp in the teens on record (records to 1948).
  • Casper, WY hit 9, making it their latest single digit temp on record (records to 1948).
  • Colorado Springs recorded a low of 19, their second coldest temperature on record this late.
  • Fort Collins recorded a low of 19, their coldest temperature this late since 1924.

We were 18 degrees in Greenwood Village and got about 4.5" new snow, making about 20-22" for the month. I was planning on cutting the lawn this afternoon, but not sure how well the lawnmower would work. That would make an interesting though short video...

I'd like to see that ;)

I will guess that we got about 5" in this storm. It was at least 3" in the day and 2" at night. It went slowly at times, so it never looked like I had 5" on ground at my place.  My best estimate is 26" at my house in the past 9 days (27.5" for the month).

3 years ago we had 6.9" of snow here in Elko.  Peak snow depth was maybe 3" ;)

Some more stats from this remarkable April...

  • DEN recorded a high of 30 yesterday, which is the coldest high this late on record. The most amazing part is that the day was mostly sunny in the afternoon.
  • The 20.4" of snow at DEN this month make April 2013 the snowiest April since 1973, and the 3rd snowiest on record
  • DEN is now at 75" of snow for the 2012-13 season, which makes it the snowiest since 1991-92. This is especially remarkable given they were way below normal Oct-Jan.
  • The low of 11 yesterday at Cheyenne was the coldest temperature this late since 1935
  • 30.3" of snow at Cheyenne this month makes it the 3rd snowiest April on record, with records back to 1915
  • The low of 6 at Alamosa, CO on 4/19/13 was their coldest temperature on record that late
  • The low of 18 this morning at Colorado Springs is the second coldest temperature on record this late, and the high of 27 their yesterday is tied for the coldest high on record this late
  • The high of 30 at Pueblo, CO yesterday is by far their coldest high seen this late - next closest is 37. The low of 19 this morning is also their coldest temp on record this late.

Looks like we have a chance of snow on Tuesday, at least for higher elevations, and maybe us. The GFS shows over 10" of snow for elevations over 9000ft. There is some discussion at the NWS Denver/Boulder that this could be a few inches in the cities.

Lets see. It's getting closer to our snow event. The GFS and NAM have some snow for the Front Range cities and sections of the Midwest. The GFS shows about 0.4" to 0.6" of rain and 2-10" of snow in my area. We would welcome some rain rather than snow.
