Mountain West Discussion

Yep, that's what the forecast discussion and the DNR sounding said. Inversion of 15 degrees C, not too far up. Now things are breaking and Denver is in the 30's. I believe Fort Collins got 3.5" from the event this week. It took a long time. That brings me up to 36.2" for the season.

2.0" Mon-Tue

1.2" Tue-Wed

0.3" Wed-Thu

total: 3.5"

Today, we had the low 60's, which was the warmest temp since the AFC championship day. The snow completely melted on the north sides of the streets. The wind hit about 50mph near the foothills.  We had a bit of rain in the last hour, which is highly unusual for the winter months.

Thunder every minute or so for the past 10 minutes here, a few lightning flashes, temps in the mid 50s. Of course no rain or snow, that's basically forbidden. But we will see what the next hour or so brings. Welcome to February??!?

Here in Denver, we are having thundersnow (graupel).  Just like a summer pop up thunderstorm cell.

OK, so the temp dropped like 18 degrees in 20 minutes (from 51 at 8:05 PM to 33 at 8:25), we had a minute and a half of rain, then snow. Snowing moderately with still an occasional rumble of thunder. Ground coated but ground temp is warm so probably won't accumulate much. Nice front! Now we need a couple days of good upslope to go with it.

Co-workers from Parker told me yesterday that they got about 4 inches in 3 hours. We got just under an inch. There was a big blob of precip that came in from the northeast and merged just south of E-470 with a little convective cell that came down over Denver from the NW between 6:30 and 8:30 PM. But consistently windy throughout.

Interesting system approaching the region this weekend.  Will be fascinating to watch the battle between the cold air and terrain.  0z NAM run doesn't look very promising if you're a snow lover, but the 0z GFS paints some impressive QPF totals over Steamboat and high points south.  Hoping for a solid 6" event here in Laramie, fingers crossed.

I don't think I've ever seen a sounding quite like that.
