I need to move to Denver.  Mild temperatures, tons of snow, mountains nearby.  What's not to like?  You get 50"+ of snow per year with the average high never getting below the mid-40s.  The temperature swings are nuts there.

No beach in miles. Tornadoes confined to far eastern CO. Very low chance of tropical disturbances reaching them.

Snow Movers Convention plows into Charlotte:

Just happened to notice this when reading the news this morning:

The American Public Works Association opened its snow conference at the Charlotte Convention Center Sunday.
More Information

Snow conference 04.07.13

So get this – there’s a snowplow convention in town.

Yes, in Charlotte – where the official winter snowfall total is a wimpy 5 inches – the American Public Works Association Snow Conference opened Sunday.

It’s a gathering of about 1,500 professionals who muscle snow out the way in latitudes more inhospitable than these.

Mike Kennedy is one of them. He’s the guy who oversees the plows in Minneapolis, which typically gets about 50 inches of snow each winter. There’s still snow on the ground there now.

“It felt pretty good to get out of the plane here,” Kennedy said Sunday as the conference got under way.
Kennedy has plenty of war stories. He’s been in the snow business for 20 years and he’s responsible for 1,000 miles of streets.

“Our biggest problem isn’t snow,” he says. “It’s parked cars.”

I am becoming an expert forecaster around western NC. From Asheville to Raleigh and everywhere in between. Several people starting to notice.

Ummmmm.......no

Well, Meteostar is giving me a shot at the 30's on Masters Weekend, which is usually the case, but I'm grieving for winter early as today I got scared out of my skin by a snake out on the back line, and it seems a mite early for snake scares.  But...when the snakes come out, then winter is over for sure.  So....the long misery begins.  Hurry winter on swift wings.  T

Denver's average high is 59. Lol that is crazy how they average half a foot of snow with an average high that high. They also average 0.7 in May.

I watched one of their local forecasts last night and their high today was supposed to be 71 with afternoon thunderstorms and by 10 PM it was supposed to be in the 20s (and eventually lower 20s) with heavy snow.  Crazy.

I don't care very much about the beach.  It's not as if there is a ton of tornado action here, either (though it does happen).  And, unless you live on the coast, the immediate effects of tropical disturbances are kind of unimpressive.  I suppose it is kind of cool to get one of those late summer tropical disturbances move in that drops 5" of rain in a few days, but it's not a big deal.

Anyways, Denver is at 70F right now and is also under a Winter Storm Warning with snow expected to move in by 9 or 10 PM.  Highs will be in the teens tomorrow with snow and the temperature will fall to 10F tomorrow night.  Soil temperatures might be a limiting factor!

1) Tornadoes not being nearby to threaten lives and property is a bad thing? Lolz. I'm assuming you're trolling.

2) Actually, the Denver area has had some tornadoes.

That incredible. 71 there now and snow by 10pm. Wow. Their high tomorrow will be lower than the record low. Lol

Sup all.  I'm new at the whole scientific aspect of meteorology, know what I'm looking for in the winter for winter storms in the SE but for severe season....am I basically just looking for the same thing on the models?  A strong low pressure system?  How can you tell which one is going to be severe etc?  What maps do you look at, just the regular 500mb heights, 850 temps, and i'm assuming looking at the RH is helpful...anything else?

It's 32F and snowing with a 30 MPH N wind in Denver right now.  Four hours ago, it was 66F with a 29 MPH S wind.

CNN loves it.  Top story on their website.

"It caused a wildfire, blizzard warning and possible tornado near Denver. Now about 2.6 million people are in the path of a massive storm."

Wilkes said Denver doesn't get tornadoes.
