That's an amazing story, buckeyefan. Thank you for sharing. Such a horrible tragedy, but I'm glad that you and your family made it through. Studying the Super Outbreak was one of the things that got me very interested in severe weather, and for all of the destruction there was, I think the one positive outcome was that we learned a great deal about tornadoes from it - knowledge that has probably saved many lives since.

I recently found this video about the Xenia tornado and thought it was rather poignant:

Awesome video :)  The clock that was shown is from the High School that was behind our neighborhood, forever stopped in time. Whoever is driving the car in this video was really close to my house. Where you see Pueblo Dr in the video, my road was the next over...Mauamee Dr.  In front of the church and over the railroad tracks is where we walked to get to my Grandparents house.

Wow, girl!  Just wow.  I knew you'd been through it, but to read you telling it...wow.  I'll never forget that day...that outbreak.  Thinking about how a whole town could get wiped out like that...and the enormity of the  day with terror, and horror spread out over the country.  There was a lot of weather in the early 70's and a lot of it wasn't nice.  It wasn't too far past Camille. The zombie zrain in Atl.  A lot of awful within a 5 year span. T

It definitely is a day I will not forget  ;)  What is strange is even though it's been 39 years, to think back and remember, it feels like yesterday. It sure did give me a respect for mother nature and I wanted to learn everything I could about the weather.

I also remember that day from a very different perspective. I lived a few miles away in Fairborn OH at the time. We watched the storm from the top of a large hill we lived on and given the uncertainty....I ended up under a matress with the storm sirens wailing. That single event is what lures me to severe wx today. Major impact on my life even though we had no damage....not even a raindrop. My sister knew a family that lived in Xenia. The mother was standing in the front room looking out a window when the neighbors car flew in and killed her. The thought that severe wx or tornadoes = someone possibly dying certainly stuck with me all these years to the point of an obsession. We all have our reasons for being here. I would have to say the Xenia tornadoes is mine.

Wow Buckeye, what a terrifying tale. I was sharing your story with my husband and he remembered all the adults leaving that evening to go to church to donate blood. He's from Oakwood.

Wow....small world  :D   I know a lot of people helped in every way they could. Easter that year was just after my birthday and I can remember everyone bringing Easter baskets to the YMCA and surrounding churches to make sure every child had one. It's amazing how a community can come together after something like this has happened.  ^_^

I didn't know that you lived close by  :)   There were sooo many terrible stories from that day. :(   We were extremely lucky to have most of our house still standing and all of us walking away without a scratch. For a long time after that day, I can remember my Mom's face draining of all color each and every time a bad storm came. It did just the opposite to me, my Dad called it my morbid fascination

The closest personal connection I have to the Super Outbreak was that the very last tornado of the outbreak (an F2 in Caldwell County, NC) hit just a couple of towns over from where my mom grew up (she wasn't there at the time and had no idea about the tornado until I showed her an old newspaper article about it).

Most violent tornado outbreak in U.S. history, killed off by the Appalachian rain shadow. Awesome.

Trying to wake this thread up ! 39 and rain is exciting, and after today , about a straight week of 65-80 degree sunny weather will have everything blooming like crazy and the cars yellow with pollen

I had to fight the pollen fight yesterday.  It surprised me, but there it is.  Reminds me I need to refill the wiper spray.  I am so not ready for this.  Two years and a half  without winter has about done me in :)  And now the teeth gritting slog thru summer in the deep south.  T

Allergy season has begun.

Bust. That's the case with all threats associated with FL and or S GA. Only thing that gives damn tornadoes or severe weather is a ****ing hurricane or tropical storm. This event was an epic fail considering words like Significant and substantial and damaging threats used by NWS and especially TWC and SPC with a 10% tornado area. But they did say that cloud cover would be the limiting factor which surely was the case.

You realize that 10% does leave a slim possibility the event may not happen.

When have you seen no tornadoes with a 10% area? Here is what NWS JAX said

.SHORT TERM...NOW THROUGH SUNDAY...

REST OF THIS AFTERNOON...A FAIRLY SIGNIFICANT MODEL BUST AS MORNING

CONVECTION FROM THE ERN GOMEX TRACK E/SE INTO THE SOUTHERN FLORIDA

PENINSULA INSTEAD OF INTO NORTHEAST FLORIDA AS FORECAST.

It's fixed. I did that before you posted that. Tapatalk is acting weird.

Good.  Now I can talk about the post.  NWS JAX called it a significant model bust.  I guess they have no input or responsibility?  Might as well fire them all as a cost saving measure in hese tough economic times and let the computer spit out a daily forecast based on the model.  While I don't consider this a major bust the "computer error" excuse is a pet peeve of mine.  Garbage in, garbage out.

Did you see record snowfall in your backyard today? Lol a trace is record snowfall. I guess I saw record snowfall in my backyard on March 3.

No snow here.  Of course I never looked except to let the dogs in and out.  :)

Here's what is significant.  Forecast highs starting Sunday. 67, 73, 75, 76.  mmmm  :)

That's just me.  If no significant accumulation is expected I give it no significant attention.  I am at my low temp for the day right now(37) and it's raining.  I doubt I missed anything.
