State of emergency expanded across my regional municipality to include the two townships adjacent this city. Also, Perth County has declared a state of emergency for the northern end of their county about 25km west of here. Evacuation centres are being set up. This is crazy I have never seen such damage here with all the fallen trees and power lines. This will probably go down as one of the worst ice storms in Southern Ontario history. There are massive chunks of ice falling of buildings and hydro lines etc. I walked to an intersection with working traffic lights and the lady ahead of me narrowly missed being struck by a falling ice chunk off a street light that could have been 1-2 feet long. Had my umbrella up all the way home.

Definitely a major ice storm for southern Ontario. Looks like you guys got it a bit worse than here. We only had about 3200 17,000 in Guelph without power at the peak, I managed to keep power the entire time. Went for a drive today and there are tons of large trees down around the city. Seems like we took a lot of damage for 10mm of freezing rain. Imagine if the potential 20mm forecast had come through:

Seems like we took a lot of damage for 10mm of freezing rain. Imagine if the potential 20mm forecast had come through:

This was taken this morning in Hawkesville in Wellesley Township (about 10 miles NW of here) which is under a state of emergency tonight. The icing was not that extreme down here. It looks like we were on the very southern fringe of the major icing damage with some trees down and a lot of large branches, and the farther south into Kitchener you get there is less visible damage, but just a mile or two north of Waterloo and it's nothing but downed trees and hydro lines which extends well into Wellington County. It would have been a... disaster if the worst of this ice storm had extended just 10-30 miles farther south.

I got into work at 630am and power was on, but by about 715am there was a round of flickering, then we lost power completely. It took about five minutes for the generators to kick in which kept us up and running all day. All the businesses around us shut down including the malls, grocery stores, and restaurants. Many are still in the dark in the city right now. I also lost home cable/phone until about 330pm.

Jonger - that's crazy!

30s for 1pm that would translate into around here, colder further east.

Those are quite the ice pictures - especially the last one with broken power poles.  :yikes:

Wow amazing picture there. I was suprised I managed to keep power all night, went outside at one point and witnessed multiple larger power flashes in the distance. North end of town was hit a lot harder than the south end (where I live). Amazing how sharp the p-type/intensity gradient can be with these types of systems... a few miles difference could have put thousands more people in the bullseye.

Just an all out miserable day again today.  Only 41 with a heavy overcast all day.  Snow showers didn't materialize, so there was no damn reason for it to be this cold lol.

Looks like are only """nice""" day will be Monday..calling for 51F and maybe some sun.

I saw the sun today for about 5 minutes around 6pm tonite...

Tomorrow is possibly the last time we'll see any sun for at least 5 days. :axe:  The sun came out for a bit earlier but that doesn't really count because the last sunny day was on Monday.

The trees here have yet to leaf out.  It's really weird to have barren trees in mid April.  Makes me wonder if May will be just as cold. :axe: :axe: :axe: :axe:

The trees are nowhere close to leafing out. I have noticed buds on maple trees...but both my mom and boss commented the other day "will the trees ever start budding?" lol. A bit of an exaggeration but lets be honest, slate gray skies give it the trees their usual mid-winter appearance. Once we get some sunshine you will probably notice the redness of some maple buds, but thats about it. The grass just greened up yesterday.

Enjoy the warmth on Sunday everyone south of I94.  Looks like the NWS is predicting a 20 degree spread between Milwaukee and Chicago, again a warm front that makes it to near the border.

I only got a 57° forecasted with a SE wind, so it's not going to be that balmy. Definitely going to be better than the last 4 days though.

Looking forward to the 72 in the point for Sunday, but after that we go back into the freezer.

Yeah, for at least a week.  At LEAST there isn't a greenland block this time.  If there was, there would have been a nasty cold snap with highs in the 20s and lows in the single digits.

The NAO was positive after the 16th... It keeps getting lower and further away and actually plummeting after the 20th to as low as -4.

Could be looking at a few day period of highs near freezing if that verifies... Whew. Interesting to say the least for the end of April. Changes my perspective of "cold" in April! 50's seem amazing at this point.

I was going to give this post a facepalm but had second thoughts. Let try to remember that this is 200hr+ ploy you posted. Verification, especially at the 2m level is next to none.

Yeah I know. I was just showing what those 850mb's translate into in mid to late April. I think the 40s in the medium range will likely become 50s as we get closer. I wouldn't face palm anything over 144 hours.
