Medium/Long Range Discussion Part 5

Nothing wrong with a cold march. Better than a "hot" March like last year. That is bad bad stuff. Really messed up vegetation(thought it killed my tree, didn't come out to May)

That said, when April comes, time for sub-freezing temps to stop. Winter becomes annoying. Sorta like getting snow in October, what is the point?

This isn't about a cold/hot March, it is about activity or the lack there of I should say. This month for the most part has been boring throughout. Sure we had the slop fest last weekend that amounted to a whole 2" here but beyond that it has been below normal activity. March 2008 was a cold March locally, but I would pay to have it happen again, because we had hyperactivity and 21" of snow.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe these forums were started for all types of weather not just winter weather (cold and boring).

Hoosier, Chicagowx, Alek, buckeye, Harry, etc. could probably better fill you in on the history, since I didn't come in until the WWBB days, even though that was over 10 years ago :yikes:, but the boards were originally started by a group of East Coast snow weenies.

That was what beavis was referring to.

Maybe that would be the case if we are going back that far, but these boards are nothing like those boards. Wow at 10 years, I have only been on the boards since 2007.

Time flies eh? :yikes:

Pretty much. WWBB was just a stopping point ( from the old twc forums/neweather etc ) for all and then when the people who owned wwbb could not keep up with the traffic etc a group of east coast people ( and a former midwesterner who passed away a few of years back ) got eastern rolling in early 2004. Way back in the wwbb days there was only a few from west of the apps and thus me, buckeye, Chicagowx, Hoosier, rdale, michsnowfreak, jbcmh, Some dude ( unsure of his name on here or if he even made it? )  from Kansas, and a couple of others. Alek arrived well after eastern started. Had a few from down south and sw part of the country more into the tropics but that was it. During the mid/late spring and summer back then the forums were dead unless a cane was threatening I95. All the action was in winter and thus what most came for. Usually things picked up around August when the winter outlook discussions got rolling.

Point is there is plenty of people on this board who like cold/winter etc including the founders and that wont ever change. There was no reason to jump on Jonger about what kind of weather he likes.

I am not jumping on him, I am annoyed with the weather in general, if he likes for it to be -15 departures every day that is fine. That thought isn't rooted in reality however. It goes both ways though, his constant trolling of anyone who mentions the prospects of the weather breaking into even closer to normal conditions gets tiresome after an entire winter.

Alot of us are annoyed with the weather. This boring crap is just beyond old. I don't care about temps ( it is spring and anything is possible so why worry ) just give me some action be it nice T-Storms, snow, heavy duty rain etc. I think that is what most of us needs. I could go for some warmer days myself but am not gonna sweat it. Just give me some action.

Thankfully in about a week to 10 days this should happen. I know the Euro says otherwise but it is trying to hold on to a dying block too long, there isn't anything that will reinforce it after this next system. 7-10 days should be enough to get things in motion again.

I hope it's cold through August. :)

I know I'm in the minority. No harm, no foul. ;)

Im with you....but I sure as hell want it longer than August...lets roll that right through NEXT winter (and beyond)... :)

I think people are extra touchy about the cold this late (boring or not) because lets face it, there were so many Morch calls the last several months that this is a big old lol from mother nature.

It's too bad rdale didn't make it over here. The battles between him and DT were always great. He would chase storms and I always enjoyed his reports from his chases. Didn't he get out of the tv met business?

There is a few who do just want some action. Cold and boring does nothing for me and neither does warm and boring. If i wanted boring i would be living in the damn desert.

Forgot about you. :D  Who else did i forget? And yeah he sorta vanished after wwbb. Those battles were epic. lol  He avoided Eastern because of DT. That is what he told me anyways. He hopped over to that stormtrack forum. Per a few here he still visits/posts on that forum i think? And yes he did leave the tv met business.

WWBB guy here....

It was a ghost town during the summer. People probably less cooped up in the house, but still....

I see him more on the Radio Reference forums, picking fights with trolls, than I do on StormTrack.

I think it's funny that you are such an anti-warminista, yet you make your living from golf.

The slow start, or no start, to the golf season here hasn't been a disaster. March golf is always precarious...last year was a freak. Season to me, in the LAF, has always been April to September.

But I'm really just anti-heat. Summers like last year's is no good for business. Most people aren't hitting the course when it's 95/75 at 1:00pm. Not to ignore the drought either...

Sometimes the best golfing is in October.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe these forums were started for all types of weather not just winter weather (cold and boring).

While of course it's enjoyable and acceptable to discuss any types of weather, I believe Harry is correct that the forums were started by folks on the east coast who wanted to discuss winter weather.

But either way...I'm 38 years old and have a meteorology degree, and I don't appreciate folks like Midwest Chaser coming on here and bullying people around...and in particular, telling me what I can or cannot enjoy.  Many people do enjoy "cold and boring", and many people don't.  It's egotistical when people walk in here and dictate what type of weather is "fun".

As Tim always points out, we all have our own tastes.  To each his own.

I could be in the minority...but I find it funny that people from the Midwest complain that winter is hanging on too long, when we haven't really much of a winter at all.  Temps drop sub-zero all the time in the Upper Midwest (not too far from here as the crow flies)...yet Chicago has had a low temp of -1 over the past 2 seasons and people who apparently like winter complain that winter is lasting too long.  It doesn't add up...but again, to each his own.

Of course I would never call out someone for liking certain types of wx (and if I've ever done this, I apologize)...but it's the attitude and dictating that bothers me.  It's unnecessary on a discussion board like this.  But if people enjoy bickering and name-calling like what goes on in junior high and high school, who am I to say that we should treat each other with dignity and respect, and put a stop to that crap.

Extended looks fine to me...we start off chilly tomorrow, but warm up everyday next week, probably into the 50Fs by next weekend... i have no issues with 50Fs and even 40Fs...i'm just in a hurry to melt off this garbage "snow" we have on the ground, which at this point is the consistency of a glacier.  This time of year, even 40F (like yesterday) with sunshine (light winds) feels great...  what stinks about warm days in spring, is that they almost always come with a strong south wind...give me mid 50Fs calm and sunshine over mid 60Fs and wind...

Last July was really bad... looking back, i think i had the AC running every day that month (very rare)...  I know i still biked a lot, but it was a sweaty mess.

Personally my style is more Seattle/Portland or even Denver then Phoenix or Miami...

Naefs has us almost to normal in early April (keeps the cold east in the lakes)...  Which that time of year is 50Fs...

I dont really see how the lowest temp of the winter correlates to the length of winter. Very mild winters can have a few extremely frigid lows and very cold winters can have unimpressive low temps.

Bottom line...winter started late and is ending late in the midwest. No, these are not January temps we are experiencing, but they are well below normal.

We've had several days this month with high's in the low 30"s and lows in the upper teens, which are normal January temperatures.

That's the best time to golf! Nobody is out there when it's 95, and as long as you're in a cart it's not terrible

Fair point in general...but even with a -5 to -8 departure for March IMBY, it's hard to say that March is wintry.  Per climo, snow cover never has a chance to hang on.  Highs in the 30s and 40s is certainly chilly for March (and I do enjoy it :))...but it's by no means wintry.
