I just got back from Peru (north of OKK) and it was pouring there. As I traveled east on US 24, it lightened up and by Wabash I was out of it. Nothing but a virgafest here. As Chicagowx, all eyes are to the southwest now. Glad to hear about the thundersnow!

Quad cities update

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE QUAD CITIES IA IL
927 AM CDT SUN MAR 24 2013

.UPDATE...
ISSUED AT 923 AM CDT SUN MAR 24 2013

A QUICK UPDATE SENT TO ADJUST PAST FALLEN SNOW TOTALS FROM
OVERNIGHT...WHICH NOW ARE CERTAIN TO HAVE BEEN 1 TO 3 INCHES FROM
EAST CENTRAL IOWA THROUGH WEST CENTRAL ILLINOIS. AFTER A MINOR
LULL IN SNOW EARLY THIS MORNING...WE ARE NOW SEEING A PUSH OF
RENEWED LIFT WHICH LOOKS TO AFFECT THE SOUTHERN 1/3 THIS MORNING.
THIS IS ALREADY CREATING HEAVY SNOW RATES IN OUR FAR SOUTH. SINCE
1/4 MILE HEAVY SNOW IS INTENSE ENOUGH NOT TO CARE ABOUT MARGINAL
TEMPERATURES VS LIGHT SNOW...OUR AMOUNT NEED TO BE RAISED. I AM
NOW GOING FOR DAYTIME ACCUMS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES IN THE SOUTH
1/3...WHICH WOULD TAKE EVENT TOTALS THROUGH 7 PM TONIGHT INTO THE
4 TO 7 RANGE. WHILE HIGH END ADVISORY AMOUNTS...THE REPORTED
AFFECTS IN THE SOUTH STILL SHOW WET ROADS...WITH SOME SLUSH...THUS
NO PLANS TO CHANGE HEADLINES ARE CONSIDERED AT THIS TIME.

FARTHER NORTH...MARGINAL TEMPS AND LIGHTER SNOWS SHOULD KEEP OUR
GOING FORECAST IN GOOD TRACK FOR NOW.
ERVIN

ESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0321

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

0912 AM CDT SUN MAR 24 2013

  AREAS AFFECTED...CNTRL IL     CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW     VALID 241412Z - 241715Z

SUMMARY...SNOW WITH RATES OF 1-2 IN/HR WILL OVERSPREAD CNTRL IL

THROUGH LATE MORNING...WITH SIMILAR SNOW RATES FORECAST TO PERSIST

INTO THE AFTERNOON.

DISCUSSION...SHORT-RANGE DETERMINISTIC GUIDANCE...INCLUDING

HIGH-RESOLUTION WRF ENSEMBLE OUTPUT...APPEAR TOO AGGRESSIVE WITH

DAMPENING THE HEAVY SNOW POTENTIAL ACCOMPANYING THE BAND OF

ISENTROPIC ASCENT ATTENDANT TO THE WARM CONVEYOR BELT CURRENTLY

CROSSING THE MS RIVER. SFC OBSERVATIONS AND RADAR DATA INDICATE

HEAVY SNOW ALREADY APPROACHING THE MS RIVER AS OF AROUND 14Z WITH

THE N/S-ORIENTED WARM-CONVEYOR-RELATED PRECIPITATION BAND...WITH

OCCASIONAL INSTANCES OF SLEET.

WITH THE DOWNSTREAM ILX 12Z RAOB INDICATING AN ANTECEDENT DEEP AND

NEARLY SATURATED PROFILE BELOW THE 600-MB LEVEL...IT WILL TAKE VERY

LITTLE ADDITIONAL ASCENT/MOISTENING FOR THE PRECIPITATION TO BE

MAINTAINED INTO CNTRL IL. ACCORDINGLY...HEAVY SNOW WILL BECOME

INCREASINGLY LIKELY IN CNTRL IL BETWEEN 1430Z AND 1530Z. TRENDS IN

WATER VAPOR IMAGERY REGARDING THE TRACK OF THE ATTENDANT MID-LEVEL

CYCLONE SUGGEST THAT SIMILAR PRECIPITATION RATES WILL BE MAINTAINED

INTO THE AFTERNOON...AS THE DRY SLOT REMAINS TO THE S...AND HEAVY

SNOW WITHIN THE DEFORMATION ZONE/COLD CONVEYOR BELT EVENTUALLY

OVERSPREADS THE AREA LATER IN THE DAY. AN ISOLATED LIGHTNING STRIKE

OR TWO WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH THE MOST INTENSE SNOWFALL RATES OWING

TO WEAK ELEVATED BUOYANCY.

12z NAM doubled total QPF for LAF...0.42" on the 0z run, 0.85" on the new run.

CMI and DEC get killed...1.30" total for Champaign, 1.39" for Decatur.

All FWIW.

DEC looks like a jackpot zone. Kind of funny as I was talking to my parents who live in Oreana (just NE of Dec) when I got the 10" storm up here, an my father said "we are done with snow, and have been for a month".

Radar hole over northeast MO strikes again.  Kirksville has been reporting 1/2 mile in moderate snow for awhile now, yet radar shows nothing over that whole area.  Like I said 1000 times by now, wish they'd put another radar in that area, but with all the cutbacks it'll never happen.

Looks like most of the models hammer LAF pretty good later on today/tonight.  Should be excellent timing too with most of the snow arriving towards dusk.  The 11.5" I called for them in the contest thread looks golden there.

Nice.

Springfield IL now with heavy snow.  Litchfield IL has 1/4 mile thundersnow.  Looks like the majority of the lightning is on the front edge of the precip, but heavy rates continue well behind the lightning.

Just started snowing lightly again here.  Ground completely bare again after the 0.3" melted off.
