Record March Temperature Reversal From Last Year

Recommended Posts

Waterloo, Iowa is experiencing about as an extreme reversal  in temperatures that you can imagine

from one March to the next at any given location in the U.S.

March 2012 had an average temperature of 51.1 for a +15.3 departure. This March so far is averaging

24.3 degrees which is a -8.1 degree departure. More cold is on the way which will push the monthly

temperature departure even lower this week.

A few other cities in the Midwest/Northern Plains experiencing a "nice" reversal. Well, everyone is for the most part...but here are a few better ones.

Dubuque IA

March 2013: 25.2º -6.9º (through 3/16)

March 2012: 50.2º +14.8º

Grand Forks, ND

March 2013: 14.5º -6.5º (through 3/16)

March 2012: 38.0º +12.8º

Mason City IA

March 2013: 23.3º -6.2º (through 3/16)

March 2012: 52.4º +15.2º

Here in Indiana, average temperatures are running 13-17 degrees colder than last March, through yesterday (average temp comparison below for six sites). This will grow larger this week as temperatures will be solidly colder than normal...all the while last March 17-24 had big time positive departures.

Thanks for adding the really detailed data. In some ways this reminds me of an opposite reversal

that we saw here in the Northeast from December 1989 to 1990. Burlington, Vermont experienced

a 22.5 degree temperature swing in the warmer direction after the coldest December

on record there.

BTV...December 1989....7.6....-15.0

BTV...December 1990....30.1...+7.5

The cooler high temperature daily departures of this March can't match last year's super warm departures in the Midwest, but as witnessed...there has been quite the turnaround.

Chicago: 27.2º colder with average high temperatures this March versus last March, through yesterday.

Detroit: 23.0º colder

Milwaukee: 25.7º colder

Minneapolis: 25.4º colder

Des Moines: 27.5º colder

Indianapolis: 25.8º colder

Moline: 27.4º colder

Columbus: 20.7º colder

St. Louis: 23.7º colder

Marquette: 23.7º colder

La Crosse: 27.9º colder

Duluth: 19.8º colder

Moline IL hasn't had one day this month with an above normal high temperature. LaCrosse, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis have had only one such day.

Note below, Milwaukee was a rather remarkable 62º colder on March 20 this year, versus last (21º vs 83º). Chicago was 60º colder and Marquette was 59º colder.

Daily high temperatures for March 2012 and 2013, and normal high temps, for the above 12 cities.

Don't really know where to put this - wicked windy here yesterday with gusts up to around 35 mph. Sunny and around 30 degrees today. No wind. Snowboarding will be very good on Sunday. Mount Snow, and also hiking up my father's meadow/hill today and snowboarding down. Lots of snow up there still. Just OBS. Again, not sure where to put this, and sorry if wrong place. Couldn't find a current temp/OBS thread. Mods go ahead and move if not right place. Can't talk right now. Leaving out words. Haha.

You can see how the March temperature patterns reflected the shift in the blocking locations

from the Great Lakes region in 2012 to the Arctic in 2013. March 2012 featured the strongest

March ridge near the Great Lakes since the late 40's. The 500 mb heights this March were the

second greatest on record for the area around the Davis Strait.
