Yeah, according to those numbers, which is all we have to go on.  Do I believe that about Danbury?  I have doubts too. All I can say for sure is I ran my average over the past eight seasons and came darn close to what the average is for Walden.

Edit:  I forgot to ask, how long do you have records for where you are now?

What were your final totals from 09-13

09-10: 64.5"

10-11: 60"

11-12: 23.5"

12-13: 54.6"

Average over those four years of 50.7 which is about 7" above the 30 year average.

09-10: 76.2" ( 52" for the month of Feb)

10-11: 66.4"

11-12: 23"

12-13: 58.1" + ?

Puts me just under 56" which I would of thought was 4-5" above normal for my location..

Seems like you are in the ball park for sure.  Feb 10 was 46" for me, nearly 3 feet above the Feb average, a nice month indeed.

Yeah Feb of 2010 was def the saving grace of that winter. That was truly one of the greatest winter months I ever experienced..

Snow depth at one point was around 40"

I would bet the over on 50" in a heartbeat for Storm King.

I took a little time to research some averages for the areas of some of us in this thread.  I have a number of NY locations as I'm the most familar with those, those of us in NJ or CT can look around for something closer to home perhaps.  I used this site http://ggweather.com/normals/snow.html along with Uptons and Mount Hollys NOWData on their Climate pages.  For the locations that have two seasonal totals the one I got from the NWS are in parenthesis.  The website uses totals through 2010 while the NWS data I saw included 2011, it's interesteing to see how 2011 affected the average for places that I have both.

DOBBS FERRY ARDSLEY, NY  30.4

GARDNERVILLE, NY (western Orange County near Wawayanda)  40.9

MOHONK LAKE, NY  61.7

PORT JERVIS, NY  42.5 (42.7)

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY 32.8

STORMVILLE, NY   57.5

WALDEN 1 ESE, NY 42.2 (43.3)

WEST POINT, NY   35.2 (35.3)

WESTCHESTER CO AP, NY 27.7

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS 1 W, NY 39.2

GREENWOOD LAKE, NJ 34.2

SUSSEX 2 NW, NJ 40.7 (42.3)

DANBURY, CT 45.3 (50.2)

Nice research. I also feel these numbers are a bit low, especially Poughkeepsie. Sometimes these co-op observers "miss snow" that melts/compacts before they can measure it at 7 AM. Lastly, snow averages to me are not that meaningful. Outlier years have too much pull on the statistic. Median is a whole lot more useful.

Thanks you.  I agree, I have no doubt the bolded is an issue.  Also if you go back into old co-op records there is a lot of T's for a trace that isn't counted in the totals and there appears to be a lot of rounding with increments of .5, not the .10 that is used now.  I have no doubt this affects the totals.  http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/IPS/coop/coop.html;jsessionid=589E9F3B979F21FCC86138CE9973062E?foreign=false&_page=0&jsessionid=589E9F3B979F21FCC86138CE9973062E&state=NY&_target1=Next+%3E

Yeap... exactly what I meant earlier about incomplete data.

Hey...have you been keeping totals for Mahopac this season by chance?

Nope sorry. there were just too many times I wasn't home to do it right. If you include the November storm we are well over 40 and it wouldn't surprise me of we are over 50. Hopefully this storm is at least as good as the one last week!

What's the thinking for Monday? I need to get home for Passover and can't leave work too early. Last week it took me just under four hours from downtown...

Agree bud..

doesn't matter to me either way.  if we see snow, awesome.  If not, I can get sand delivered and start working on my paver projects haha.

18z gfs did look better though.  Just not sure I buy the whole CNJ jackpot idea right now.  I feel like it's wash, rinse, repeat this year....you and I are progged to get 2" and end up with 10.

Good evening,

18 GFS looked better for NW NJ.

Looking at by backyard, if all goes well, we may get 3 or 4 inches.

If all goes bad, we see clouds.

Cheers,

Matt

talked to someone else on here from Mahopac...he has us at 45"...seems about right to me

Tomorrow I'm thinking we don't get anything more than 1 inch max...and I doubt any of it covers the pavement

^^ Yeah, bottom line is we are within a few inches of average. We didn't get there in any sort of normal way but we got there. I got to drive in some horrendous conditions, saw some awesome winds, had two really good storms and ski season is still kickin' hard up north. We even had an above average number of days with snow on the ground which is always my favorite way to gauge a winter. I'll give it a B+.

I went for a hike in Patterson this afternoon to take a look and see if I needed to do any trail maintenance at my favorite mt bike spot. Started at 1100' and headed up. Pretty much everything E/S/W facing is burned out but anything with any sort of northerly aspect still has at least 2" and true north aspects have a solid 8+. Any place without snow is soft but will dry quite quickly I think. Every drainage is very, very wet and I think those will take a while to dry and I have a feeling those northerly areas will be signicantly muddy for a long time, the snowpack is super dense and holding a lot of water.

agreed....though i may have mentioned 500 times that this is my first season up here.... not sure what to expect, and sensible weather doesn't match up to any reporting station. haha

I hope not lol.. Im done with winter for now.

Above avg snowfall, arctic outbreaks & snow cover into late March... Im ready for warmth now :)

Yeah same here.. I have MGJ to my NE, FWN to my S and my elevation is doubled than both reporting stations. Sometimes I wish I can use MSV but then that would be cheating since its due N with an elevation doubled mine lol..

On 4/1/97 Eastern Sussex County had about 24 inches of snow.  I was living in the condos in Great Gorge and it was crazy.  I also remember receiving about 11 inches  on the last day or two of March in 2001.  I also remember snow showers in May 2003.  So in other words you can expect the unexpected.

Patrick,

If we get anymore snow this season, my wife will cry :violin:

This was season was the most my rookie wife has been exposed.

overall to snow,  my street sucks for snow, long steep hill etc.

summer better kick ass on the mountain or my wife will express concern.  :loon:

we had a momma bear with 3 cubs 40 yards from the mail box this morning. that was totally awsome.

will post video later.

Cheers,

Matt

very cool... so far I have only seen bears in the distance... nothing very close to the house yet, but I'm sure they are coming.  As much as I loved the winter up here, the other three seasons will require a longer adjustment period.

Here's a recap of yesterday:

Wake up, realize it feels warmer outside than it has been so far this season. Take the kids out for a walk.  See mosquitoes the size of dessert plates.  google "west nile."  take kids back in.

make lunch.  see very big spider dancing on my kitchen floor. I can hear him.   chase him through living room, dining room, family room, squash him on wall of bathroom.  Make note to repaint walls with satin finish.

hear dogs barking...look out window.  biggest groundhog I ever saw.  bigger than my 40 pound dogs.  oh crap, is that a groundhog or a badger?  google "badger."  remember that badgers don't eat leaves the way this groundhog is.

look over the lake, notice that the trees are close to exploding....see snake bigger than my arm.  I'll be darned if it's not a copperhead. Head back inside, open door...there's a frog with giant antennae staring at me... google says they are "cave crickets."  More spider-ish than frog-like, except for the giant drumstick legs.

eat dinner, get ready to head to shoprite.  move logs by front door... see the biggest cockroach I have ever seen.  google "giant roach outside".... learn about something called the "Pennsylvania wood roach."  Pennsylvania can keep them.

Get home with shoprite bags.  bring bags in through garage.  spiders literally falling off of me all over the place.  take xanax and shower.

let dogs out in their fenced area to do their business... see raccoon as big as me.  raccoon seems to enjoy the spotlight on him.

it's only april.  I love wildlife.  of the critters i saw today, the only things i considered shooting were the pennsylvania wood roach, and the giant spider.  haha.   anyone know the temperature threshold that drives out the stink bugs and lady beetles?  that should be fun.

I remember the first time I saw those cave crickets in my house years ago, holy crap!  I had never seen anything like it before.
