weathercoins
think they may close tho if they have to shut the metro in the burbs Agreed... Metro shuts above ground if 8 inches is likely (third rail is 8 inches up). Red/orange lines will need to be shut, at least west... Fed gov will close because of it. mattie g
I don't know, melting on contact may be worse than compaction tomorrow. You may want to gently remove anything over 1/2". Good point. Then each new measurement will include the 1/2" I left on the table.
RickinBaltimore
I hate asking this question, but what would you expect for Baltimore/Columbia? My not-so-expert guess would be perhaps 2-3 inches in Baltimore of a sloppy messy snow and 4-5 inches in Columbia?

snowfan
York and Lancaster Counties just upped to WSWs with 5-8 inches listed in the warning, but 5-10 in the 7-day text forecast.
87storms
so we have nam with 2" of qpf all snow in dc vs 1.5" of qpf, mostly rain on gfs. great hobby.

WxUSAF
DT must be seriously butthurt that the Euro caved to the GFS IRT snow up in SNE and no models show significant snow into Chester, VA. Hasn't posted all day.
eurojosh
LWX seems to be going more with the nam... my point and click (Cabin John, MD) now says the precip will last as snow until ~10 AM thurs, then mixing before gradually ending.

BlizzardNole
About Fed Govt -- with telework now common, the idea is they will be more liberal with it and allow unscheduled telework even for marginal events. However they will almost never close. That's the give-and take...you can stay home but you're expected to work from home. I don't know about the 8" rule though. Hasn't posted all day. I don't really follow him, but I have read some of his stuff before (especially the stuff copied to here). I can't say I'm unhappy that a person as sh**ty as he is busted horribly and is going to get rained on. I do feel bad for the good posters from his area though. I'm not without compassion there. blueapple
You also wonder if the Jan 2011 event (the last snow event they SHOULD have closed for) will influence them. OPM obviously shouldn't have opened that day, and the weenie would say that the decision to not close that day would make them more trigger-prone for tomorrow. However they will almost never close. That's the give-and take...you can stay home but you're expected to work from home. I don't know about the 8" rule though. If there is 8" or more the metro won't run above ground, which means the govt is sure to close. The truly ironic part of this all? This is from my agency's internal website: General Interest: Telework Day, Wednesday, March 6, 2013 Go green!! Give your car a rest and telework. On Wednesday, March 6, 2013, the agency will participate in the third annual Telework Week, sponsored by the Mobile Work Exchange (previously the Telework Exchange). The Mobile Work Exchange is a public-private partnership focused on demonstrating the tangible value of telework and serving the emerging educational and communication requirements of the Federal telework community. Employees are encouraged to telework on this day and show support for this nationwide event.

Fozz
Honestly I'm expecting 4-7" at this point......... euro seems to have been very persistent about not giving too much north of I70 (most likely 3-6 up my way), and the gfs has been trending a bit worse for northern MD, and I can easily imagine the scenario that psuhoffman laid out, of being screwed by redevelopment with precip weakening as it reaches northern MD. The NAM still looks great and very juicy but I've gotta be realistic here, we all know it isn't very trustworthy but who knows.....

joc111
And another 30% for the NAM being the NAM wrt QPF. Two 30% reductions would trim that to 10.24"; I'm not buying that either. Would I be thrilled with it? Absolutely, but it's not at all realistic with marginal temperatures, ground warmth and microclimate. We'll see.
