What do you want me to give it a A+?????? DUDE we had like 8 people that got killed in car crashes because of LES..What is wrong with you people.

We really only had a week of intense LES through out the Winter. It's pretty common around here to get 6-12" from LES throughout the year. It just so happens most the "intense" bands set-up in a very populated area. I think your more upset in the fact that we have not gotten the "bomb" or the post came at 2:45am also means you didn't get any last night :P am I right?

Why do you care so much what he graded the winter anyway? Everyone's final winter grade is gonna read differently. Take a pill man! :P

Ajdos didn't even state a reason for the grade other than something non meteorological. I mean if he has an over the top standard for winter then the grade should be taken for what it is worth.  Plus he tends to be an over the top sensationalist who mood swings every single model run, ie a troll.

If that's the case, worst thing you can do is feed a troll.

Nothing like the usual follies/trolling from the SE MI brigade  Its true that the eye is in the beholder for grading, but it should be based on what you like (be it total snowfall, snowcover, big storms, sky conditions, temps, etc etc). When someone throws out a ridiculously low grade (as we see every year here even as snow continues to handily exceed climo) without reasoning...its not eye of the beholder, it is as stebo put it, trolling.

I cant count how many times ajdos was excitedly posting during an event how he had XX inches of snow in Sterling Heights, more than expected, etc etc. Also have to love how Spartys met-winter grade went from a C earlier in this thread to an F-, in both cases after met winter had ended :lmao:

But this car accidents in snow squalls crap has to take the cake. Of course its unfortunate and no one wants to see it happen, but its life in a northern metro area in winter. LOWERING a grade because of it? Its funny because those lake squalls were bonus...we NEVER get that much les in this portion of SE MI, so rather than enjoying those numerous days of 1-3" whiteout squalls in addition to our 2-7" synoptic snow events, it is now LOWERING the grade....just as had those squalls not happened the grade would be LOWERED because we missed out on LES. I cannot WAIT until severe weather season is graded. Because severe weather isn't severe if it isnt damaging someones property and unfortunately often taking lives. So I should assume the only way it gets an A is if there is no severe weather.

Hey josh... I woke up thisorning and this was the first thing I thought about, dunno why lol :P

How come you never come up in mid winter when you could see some serious snow falling?

Deep snow is cool but days and days of non stop snow is amazing!

Let me explain the mindset of some SE MI posters to you....

If you have lasting snowcover its boring and gets dirty, if you don't all the snow that has fallen is stat-padding or pointless because it melts quickly.

If your area is getting more snow than everyone else, regardless of how much or little falls, its aggravating unless its a 2+ foot storm. If your area is getting less snow than most other places, its aggravating because your a screw hole.

If you miss out on a 6-10" storm, complaints galore about how &^*$% SE MI always misses out....when SE MI jackpots in a 6-10" storm its even more frustrating because sure we jackpot in these storms, we cant in the 18"+ storms.

When we are almost continuously exceeding snowfall climo here, and its starting to really show in the record books....you will hear a million excuses why its not fair (nickel and diming, stat padding, etc), but the second we are below normal in snowfall (see 2011-12 or the very beginning of 2012-13) you hear the moans.

Ive mentioned it before but it really deserves its own point. Stat-padding. Just exactly what kind of snow in SE MI is statpadding? Well..its fluffy snow...slushy snow....powder snow....and snow that melts rather quickly regardless of its initial ratio,

Models showing a system that never materializes (even though said system is not of historic proportions) really sets off a flurry (pun intended) of swearing, emotions, etc. A storm that hits and is a complete surprise (modeled to miss us or underdone by the models) may evoke an hour or two of happiness before you start to hear "I have to shovel AGAIN", "another long commute", or the best "sure, these 6" and under storms never fail to exceed expectations, but what about the bigger ones?".

When you have a winter with very low snowcover (see 2011-12) all you hear is how it doesnt look like winter, bare ground in MI in Jan, it looks like spring in mid-winter, so depressing. But any other time when snowcover is above normal it is mocked by most as a not-important aspect of winter (outside of the far north winter rec areas).

I could go on and on....bottom line...there isnt a winter in the world that will garnder a grade higher than a C-/D+ from some. Oh well, its life :)

I'm touched

I had a wonderful time up north, even though it was rainy yesterday (Sat was my main outdoor day). I really should come up spontaneously for a day or two in a LES storm next winter. But to be honest, the reason I wait until late winter is strictly for the snowpack. I can see snow falling all the time here in SE MI. Of course its not the same as being in an intense LES band, but cant always work your schedule around that. But planning an early March trip to northern MI you are guarenteed to see some of the best snowpack of the winter. I missed the best by a few weeks this time, but in years past it is dead-on the peak depth of winter when Im there (see 2008 or 2012). Doesnt help that I can never find a friend to go (as it is my friends were trying to coax me into going with them to Vegas this weekend..yeah thats gonna happen ). So I wait and plan a trip with my mom who loves snow. The general attitude towards winter is like night and day from the northern to southern part of the state.

I'm going to rate this winter locally as a D+.

I'm going to rate northern Michigan a B.

I'll rate the UP as a B+.

All these locations were considered based on standards. The slow start dropped all locations one full grade and SE Michigan drops for a slow start and lack of widespread warning criteria snow.

Powerball is the only one who lives in any of those cities. Forbes is so anti-Detroit its not funny anyway, not to mention their formulas are a joke. The very weather that many of us want is what adds significantly to their miserable index (long, cloudy winters). Nothing like having two miserable cities (Detroit and Flint) surrounding one of the countries wealthiest counties

Yeah slow start was true. On the one hand, its even more impressive how snowfall totals caught up to/exceeded normal after the snowless start. But on the other hand no amount of snow can take away the fact that a snowless green landscape was seen until Dec 21st. Snow during the Christmas SEASON (not just Dec 24/25) is a huge thing for many.

Well that explains it and I kinda figured that was the reason.

It's kinda a shame, I live 50 miles from the bridge and I went to the UP only once to see the I -500 in the Soo. While I was there tho I crossed into Canada and saw so e amazing snow on the eastern shore of Superior.

I guess living here I'm satisfied with what I get and don't feel the need to travel up.

What did you mean by your last sentence in your post tho??

Quality meltdown from Josh. I too would be in a bad mood upon returning to downriver wayne cnty after a UP trip.

Umm you need to look up the definition of meltdown. Im not in a bad mood at all. Could never live where I was at...the town is stuck in the 1960s. It was what it was supposed to be...an end of winter weekend getaway.

3 cities in the top 10!

We are miserable people!

I have visited most major cities in the US... They were all full of miserable people. Humans don't belong as crammed together, we annoy each other too much. Give me an acre and some trees.... I can drive to work, not work where I live.

Meltdown and torch are the two most overused words on Amwx.

I mean that people in this part of the state generally have a negative attitude towards winter. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of people who do enjoy winter, at least in the beginning. But everytime it snows you usually here "well it is pretty, but i have to drive, have to go to work, have to shovel, etc etc etc". When you are up there...EVERYTHING is about snow. Its actually funny that their entire livelihood is about snow. They do not want spring at all yet. Yesterdays rain falling on 2-3 feet of cement had the locals scared lol.

Yep! You're exactly right. Snow is intertwined in the culture up here. Lots if livelihoods depend on it. When snow was late here this year, locals were all a buzz about it.

When I came to look at my home before I bought it, the man that renovated it told me " the snow comes, gets deep, and stays!" Normally by 11-15 each year but like I said was late. Still managed over 100" too.

Lots of ways people are different here than down south. The hurry up and hurry life doesn't exist.

I would think that if you didn't care for snow, then living up there is probably not the right place for you. So that's why I think there isn't much bitching going on up there.

On the other hand, there's more people down here that are a bit on the poor side, and lack the financial resources to move to places more comfortable to them. Many around my age and younger go off to colleges somewhere out west or down south.

Snow isn't the only thing that people complain about in SEMI, it's everything, the economy, the cold, the roads, you name it. They believe the grass is greener on the other side. It's an irritating mentality to deal with for people that actually DO want to live here.

Complaining about normal climate in a location is annoying. No different than moving to Florida and complaining about love bugs and August afternoon downpours.

This winter, gets an F.

No two ways about it.  We did get snow, and, after all of the futility at the start of the season, we approached seasonal norms.... However, it all fell in the space of a couple of weeks.  It was wet and heavy, and there was no arctic cold to follow up.  So, this winter gets an "F".
