March's greatest wintry periods

This is the best we can see in March for a ten day period...some of these years had a great third week of March...1960 was the best of the lot...1956 was second and 1967 third...1993 and 1958 round out my top five...

Regardless of what happens with the 3/7 storm, model support is increasing for a cold outbreak around mid-month with more snow opportunities. Could we rival one of these historic stretches and break the string of warm, snowless Marches?

Upton recorded their all time record low for March in 1967...on the 19th with a low of -7.5 F.  The next morning they fell to -2.0 F for the second coldest temp.  March 1967 saw 31.5" of snow out there.

I remember steam rising from the melting snow the day it was 20 for the high...I never saw that before or since...

1967 was the last time that NYC saw single digits in March with the most recent  record low temperature

on any date coming in 2003.

11 in 1962...

11 in 1950...2" of snow in mid April...cold April...

11 in 1943...very cold April...

Our 10" or greater March snowfall accumulations happened in years with good blocking and

temperatures averaging 40 degrees or lower in NYC. We have had fewer opportunities since

1996 with most of the years coming above 40 degrees. Years like 2001 that were cold enough

with blocking we were unlucky. The March average temperatures were low enough back

in the 50's and 60's to have more opportunities to put something bigger together.

March 1960 was one of the biggest snowfalls on record here with 28"....I think the only bigger storm was probably March 1888, though co-op data for Dobbs Ferry only goes back to 1947 so it's hard to know. 1960 was not as big of a winter overall with only one other major snowfall coming in Dec '59.

 

66-67 was a classic back-loaded winter. There was an incredible stretch in mid-March that year here in Dobbs Ferry.  12.1" fell with the 3/15-3/17 storm...here are some dailies from that brutal period of snow and cold:

To get close to zero on March 19th is absolute madness, and I know Upton hit -8F that night! The craziness continued in April..after hitting 75F on April 1st and 80F on April 2nd, 0.2" of snow was measured in Dobbs Ferry on April 24th with a low of 34F,  and a trace was measured on April 27th with a low of 35F. Snow from the 4/27 storm accumulated in NNJ and elevated SE NY. The warmth finally kicked in on April 30th with a high of 75F.

March 2005 was the last of the decent Marches up here...2004 also had two snowfalls of 5" and 7.7" right around the equinox, but temperatures were warmer that month.

2.5" also fell on 3/24 in 2005, though the cold was mostly gone after the stretch above. The flash freeze on 3/8 (?) and having four lows in the teens during the first 12 days of March was impressive.

The 12z ECM doesn't show much opportunity to hit 60F...cold is still locked in on 3/22 and we flirt with -12C 850s a few times.

if the GFS is right we don't get above 50 for the month of march and average -5 to -7 for the next 2 weeks. I wouldn't be surprised if we ended at -3 for the month. What are the top 10 coldest march's?

I think my high temp on 3/18 was 12 or 13, just nuts for that late in the season and windy too, and the low on 3/19 was -5.

March 1958 ended up with a max of 57 on the 11th and a min of 27 on the 9th...it averaged just over 40.0 and had almost 16" of snow...we need more snow...

With the forecast high and lows from the nws (which very well could verify too high as it has since the cold has set in) we average around 35 for the next 4 days. The average over those 4 days is around 44. So we look to rack up another 4 days of -8 to -10 departures, including today. So it looks like by the weekend were talking avoUt -2.5 to -3 with another wk or so to go in the month.

Yeah, we can always use more snow here. NYC has joined an elite November- March snowfall club that has been

inactive for a while. This is the first November and March in the same season that recorded over 4" each since 1939.
