KChuck
http://www.meteo.psu.edu/~fxg1/WXTYPE/loop25se.html appears to be more accurate than WeatherBug in depicting current ptype conditions, FWIW. 34.4 and light rain, no visible icing 4 miles north of the downtown Kernersville metropolis. MarvelMountain
33 and raining hard right now. Wind is gusting to 20. Ice covers the trees on the mountainside across from me. Nothing at the house. Lived here four years. Never seen this before. Over 1 1/2 inches of rain so far.
HurricaneTracker
Buncombe, Henderson and Transylvania upgraded to Ice Storm Warning...Freezing Rain Advisory now issued for Eastern McDowell, Greater Burke/Caldwell, Alexander, Catawba, Lincoln... Got a feeling there will be glaze on the trees come daylight... Yep. I was calling for this all day yesterday. GSP finally caught on at the last minute... WilkesboroDude
Trees are coming down in western Wilkes. One would think this would be warning criteria looking at the trees alone here. Winter wonderland for sure. It appears the grassy areas are now starting to freeze over. Not sure how the 2 hour delay is going to work...I am not risking it. calculus1
The GFS was definitely much better than the NAM for the piedmont locations. I went below freezing at 3:20 AM and then back to 32 at 6:40 AM. During those 3+ hours below freezing, I had 0.43 inches of rain fall. Obviously, it didn't all freeze on contact, as some would run off, but I would guess there was between a 0.1-0.2 inch glaze on the deck and trees. The trees were actually quite beautiful this morning.
packfan98
Car thermometer just ticked down to 31 as I pulled into the parking lot at work in north Greensboro. Icicles are forming on elevated surfaces and elevated walkways are getting icy.

WilkesboroDude
Risen to 34.5* just as the rain began. Looks like a day of cold rain in store for the valley. Could still work out.. dew-points there are low 20s vs 30s in NC. Timing may help negate the icing some tho.

kvegas-wx
Vastly different conditions across kernersville this morning. Half degree variances are making huge differences in accums on trees and powerlines. Literally nothing on the southside of town, noticable icing on trees in town and then significant icing on the north side close to walkertown. 5 mile stretch with very different results. I have some trees bending here in the neighborhood. So close to a mega ice event!

Yes, it seems as if we have had several events where we were about 2 degrees away from a MAJOR event instead of a nuisance event. I'll take a nuisance when it comes to ICE storms. I love having my POWER!
Brick Tamland
37 and rain here. It's miserable. Too many days like this lately.
NEGa
Well this sucks -32.2 and raining with a cold wind lol. Talk about a close call, oh well. Imagining the difference about half a degree would have made haha
Busick
Ice on all the trees here and all elevated surfaces temp between 31-32 degrees 0.1 ice accumulation Thank god this did not start 6 hours earlier or it would have been a bad ice storm! nchighcountrywx
@wxbrad: CURRENT POWER OUTAGE MAPS: Henderson & Mcdowell counties the worst hit right now. That's where 0.50" of ice has... http://t.co/****PpVYka We are lucky it was not several degrees colder as this would be worse over more widespread areas with more accretion and less run off
MarvelMountain
Just made a short drive up Cedar Creek Road north of Lake Lure, and above the 1,700 foot level, it is a disaster! The ice is over an inch diameter on the trees and power lines, and it was still building. Trees are down, and lines are dropping just above the road. Back here at the house, ice is on the trees, and almost three inches has fallen so far. Here are a few pics I made about 45 minutes ago along Cedar Creek Road. WilkesboroDude
Was late getting to college. Had to move several large pine tree limbs from the road. My hands smell and are sticky! One came crashing down while I was on the road. Had to wait 10 mins to thaw windshield way too thick. Power-lines also down.
Disc
Had to go up on one of the local mountains to find some ice. I'm at about 1050' IMBY and this was taken at around 1700'
