snowstormcanuck
Today's 12z Euro and the 12z GFS show a clipper-type system affecting the lower Great Lakes late Friday into Saturday. 0z EURO was marginal with sfc temps but that's to be expected at this time of year. Assuming it affects us, hopefully we can get most of the QPF at night.
Geos
Nice pics. Definitely more snow up there than here. Only patches left here. Do you ever have problems with boatloads of mosquitoes with that pond being back there? Not any worse then the next yard over. Once things thaw out I put an agitator in to stir up the water and a pellet that floats on top of the water that kills the mosquito larva. What's nice when it overflows like this, is all the leaves and crap that get washed in during the fall flows out down the hill. Otherwise I have to take a rake or pool net and fish out that debris. Getting a light rain/snow mix now.

All last summer it was around 3-4', which is extremely low. Up to 11' now, and is expected to crest at 15' in a few days. If it were to reach 18-19' parts of Erie start to go under water. I think it'd have to reach about 22-23' to reach here.

Flooding isn't an issue here, except basement related and once in a rare while - street flooding down the block. Quite a few rivers recording very high levels. Nice cluster of black dots around Chicago - a lot of snowpack + Urban runoff is really boosting those stream levels fast.
daddylonglegs
A pond like that here would probably freeze solid. Fish in there?
wisconsinwx
We have not had bare ground since late January, can't imagine that there are too many years that has happened where all of February and the first half of March had at least enough snowcover to cover the ground the whole time. Geos
A pond like that here would probably freeze solid. Fish in there? Not yet. It wasn't until late summer that it was actually finished. The pond is feed by ground water, which is about 50° so that keeps the water open underneath the ice. Last years drought really lowered it for awhile. I took the time to deepen a section, so fish would have a deeper place to go in colder weather and for a place for them to escape predators - like Raccoon's that might want to reach in to grab one! Would have had to put the fish in a tank for awhile, because it got so low. Come April I'm hoping to get fish in there for the longer haul. Frogs and turtles already frequent the pond. Rain/snow mix continues lightly.

michsnowfreak
Sitting at about 37° now, but colder air starting to infiltrate in. Most spots I measured were between 7-8". The amount of exposed grass in my yard could fit within a 20x20' area. Today is day 51 of snow cover for the winter. Pond is full and overflowing down the hill. Water has carved a nice little canyon through the snowpack! 130311_0003.jpg 130311_0001.jpg 130311_0002.jpg Talk about Mt Geos lol. You probably literally have the most snow left in southern WI/northern IL. I looked at wunderground webcams and cannot find a SINGLE one in northern IL with as much snow left as you. Only a few in the far north with a light or patchy cover.

I went 15 miles to the west this afternoon and there was less snow out that way with more ground showing through. Snow depth today hasn't really changed and now it's snowing lightly again. It will be the areas within 10 miles of the lake that will have the most snow on the ground right now. My snow cover matches what WI has right now more closely. harrisale
Another river level comparison: 48 hours ago and tonight, as heavier rain came through. This is a little stream near my house that reacts very flashy and rises quickly. If only the sun hadn't gone down, I'm positive its still rising now. Was just at bankfull when I left. 48+ hours of melting temps and about 0.40" rain. Start the first vid then the 2nd right after and they line up pretty well! Fullscreen your browser to make sure they both fit on the screen. Happy with how this turned out, if only I had caught the crest of the stream tonight in a few hours. 48 hours ago: Tonight:
cyclone77
Did a 4 day time lapse of the snow melt that started on March 8. Started around 10" and ended today at around an inch. Snow melted a lot slower than anticipated due to temps underachieving temps the last few days. The very wet snow was very reluctant to melt too, even with almost 2" of rain. https://vimeo.com/61580143
michsnowfreak
Got 0.27" of rain today. After Feb finished very wet and snowy, this was our first measurable precip of March (the 0.2" of snow earlier in the month was on just a T of liquid). daddylonglegs
Geos- There is one of these parked by my house right now...wonder if I slip the guy a 20 spot if he'll drive over with it and dig me a 12ft deep pond??? Geos
DLL- that would be the easiest way to dig a pond! Need something to shore up the sides of a 12' hole though. All the rocks around my pond were hand plucked from fields and from areas of development. Maybe another quick shot of snow for you on Thursday? Got some icy patches outside now. Tomorrow's popcorn snow showers should be interesting to watch.
