Storm underwhelms in Chicago, strengthens to give Josh his 3"+, and then completely dies before reaching me. lolololol

lol. Seriously though, its kinda baffling that DTW (2.9", 0.29") had a tad more snow/liquid than ORD (2.7", 0.27") when no model showed that, in fact, not one was even close to such a scenario. Where did Chicagos qpf go? We had dry air to overcome too.

His original forecast wasn't his final forecast.

The range across the area was 1-3.5"...locally higher.

On the news tonight he had a graphic that said 2-5" fell across the region.  He's definitely on the slant sticking/weenie bandwagon when it comes to amounts, whether before or after the storm.  Not sure why he's like this these days, as I always remembered him being very meticulous with the number game.

For like the first event of the winter, ARB (2.3") did not outsnow everyone else in yesterdays sand-like snowstorm in SE MI . Looks like the winners were the heart of DTW/Wayne county (all reports ranging from 2.9-3.1") and up near Saginaw (4-5").

Despite temps rising briefly to 35F (but hovering for many hours at 33-34F) with fog overnight, the snowpack did not budge with its high water content.

Nice storm here, especially as models had less than 0.10" qpf here until 24 hours or so before the storm. Once again, an overperformer (though a match with the last minute model trends). Ended up with 3.1" snow on 0.31" liquid imby, a FAR higher impact snowfall than the previous several 2-3" type snowfalls. Lasted less than 4 hours and the snow was like sand. Roads an absolute nightmare as it was dense 10-1 ratio snow but the surface was so cold there was absolutely no melting on the roads. Between drifting and tire tracks, the roads were very rutted with snow. Side note, I cant believe we got about what Chicago got. They were supposed to get 3-4 times more than us. Really isnt their winter.

Great photos. Rare you see 3-4" of snow cover the roads that deeply, really a testiment to how fast the snowfall rates were that morning.

Thanks. BTW, I forgot you had reported 3.4" here. You should report to the NWS, no spotters in Detroit proper (sometimes Powerball reports).

Wayne co reports were 2.9" DTW, 3.0" Westland, 3.0" Grosse Pte, 3.1" MBY, 3.4" YBY.

It is rare that you see conditions like yesterday with that amount of snow, but  it was like the "perfect storm". It was a unique combination. The snow was like sand. It all fell in less than 4 hours. It had a 10-1 ratio (sually 10-1 ratio snows are when surface temps are 30F+, so roadsalt does wonders). Surface temps were in the low 20s.
