Went down to Hoyoke yesterday to pick up the car.  Not sure at what point it happened, but at least by the time I was in Whately or Hatfield, there was not a patch of snow in the flats.  For those of you who don't know The woods in the hills clearly had in those flat zones that look like mini-Nebraska, there was nothing.

Unless by some fluke things play out with a couple inches next week, methinks the SNE snowpack will quickly be a memory--below normal temps be damned.  It is what it is.

What kind of ride did you get? Please tell me it wasn't a Prius

I think that part of the valley didn't see much out of the early March storm.  I actually see more patches of snow in the southern part of the valley in Longmeadow/Enfield in protected areas.  Northern facing slopes and wooded areas still have snow.  Parts of my yard probably have at least 8-10" but most open areas are bare, to be honest.

20° this morning.  I can't believe that it's late March and I'm still getting perfect sap weather.  I usually just have one or two days a week by April but every day this week has been flowing well.

Nice Joe,  I may put down my pre-emergent this weekend as well.  Looks like I see low 50's (maybe even mid) right into next week.  Perfect early Sping weather.  Maybe a little rain/snow overnight tonight.

where is the shade? There is a reason ski areas are built on north facing slopes.

lol...yep.

You call tell in the Rev's photo that the sun is facing him and that lawn is sloped away from the afternoon sun. It may not be true north facing but east facing is usually just as good as it only gets direct sun in the morning at the coldest time of day, while a western facing lawn will get baked in the sun during the hottest time of day.

It all goes into snow management. I've always thought the weenies would love some of the meetings at a ski area where the number one focus is how to manage snow so it stays around longest, stays in the best quality, etc....just imagine a bunch of adults going into a conference room (many at the executive level) on a daily basis for a meeting called "Snow Plan" where you discuss weather and snow for an hour.

Not to mention cottonwood smells like a combo of mud, B.O., and cat pizz when splitting it green.  Plus it absorbs water like a sponge, but I'll take it if its free.  Your def. right on about elm, that twisted grain is impossible to split by hand.  Surprised even 1 cottonwood was growing in Maine, its a rarity here.

Used to be one just down the street from my place, in a back yard. The Orono campus of U.Maine has one 4' in diameter. Of course, any university with a forestry and/or horticulture program is apt to have odd plant species around. Orono also has ponderosa pine and Douglas fir (the Rocky Mt variety, as the coastal type wouldn't survive here), among other non-native trees.

For "firewood" with water, I nominate balsam poplar. One could use goggles when splitting it green, to shield the eyes from the spray. It's not hard to split, though sometimes the maul sinks in almost to the handle without cracking the piece open. Stinky, too, and the buds get uber-sticky in spring; I had some fall on the hood of a freshly waxed pickup, and it's like they corroded their way down to the metal.

Jeff,

Avg frost around my place. After the mid-Dec storms, which came before temps got down to zero, we always had at least 6" OG. Some spectacular frost heaves around, but nothing out of the ordinary. (And on 219 thru the Sumners, "ordinary" frost heaves are truly spectacular.) Last week's snowstorm has completely melted from the south-facing part of the little road built for my timber harvest, though the level and north-aspect parts are still white, and there's 13" at the stake.

Great start to the day, Some rain showers on tap, Then sunny right into the weekend from thurs on

I'm hoping it holds off till after 7pm.. Should be cold enough by then for white ..

Tonight: Snow likely. Total snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches. Lows in the upper 20s. Northwest winds around 10 mph. Chance of snow 70 percent.

Even down in the tropics we'll get some snow showers. Though some say we're living in denial expecting more snow.

I'm pretty much in spring mode now,if u got snowpack left enjoy fightin, the good fight for another week, but then its gone

More like two weeks at my place, as the 13" at the stake has 5-6" water equiv, and won't go quickly unless we get a run of 50s/60s and/or nights well above 32. Saddleback, with its elevation and NW aspect, should have plenty of snow on the upper trails on Mothers' Day, though lack of warm bodies will have long since ended lift service.

What kind of ride did you get? Please tell me it wasn't a Prius

LOL--no Prius' in my life!  I've retired the 2005 Highlander for a 2013 SantaFE 2.0T.  Usually I go with a 1-2 yo CPO, but this one just shouted out 'buy me'.

My p/c even has the sort of 'non-accumulating but still accumulating' wording of 'less than 1/2 an inch" for both tonight and tomorrow.  Surface temps don't really matter a whole bunch I don't think when it's landing on existing snow.

Even down in the tropics we'll get some snow showers. Though some say we're living in denial expecting more snow.

Not sure about that for those in the elevated interior.

Without replenishment, we'll open up some bare spots on the sun torched areas (actually already starting in the most exposed south facing spots)....but the shaded side of streets/woods/etc are going to take a lot longer than 1 week to go. The snow isn't thin there...its quite deep with a lot of water content in it.

Not done with snow for the interior me thinks.

Nah...those of us still hoping for snow are delusional.

50F means its time to break out the BBQ and play horseshoes and hit the lake in the rowboat for some bass fishing.
