well colder air is also bleeding in so it's not all nighttime. but by this time of year you probably want it to snow at night unless its in the 20s and ripping.

I guess my point is that every little bit helps. Losing the sun isn't a bad thing if you're looking to shed 5 degrees or so.

arguably my favorite storm of all time and have seen that storm pop up around threads here recently.  flakes were so big they lit up the night sky.  i was a kid so they looked like freakin' snowballs, but i don't think i remember a storm with crazier rates.  i was too young for 1983, but heard that was sick as well.

And it was nothing compared to the rates during 1979,  they were spectacular.

there was lightning in the Feb 87 storm too, but little thunder....not sure what that means other than the lightning was really high up cloud to cloud type only.

that might have been the storm i've heard people talk about.  that one i definitely was too young for.  i'd love to take the winters of late 70s/80s again.  you grow up around that and you think every winter is going to be solid.

no snow in bethesda yet.  the older i get the more i realize just how sensitive to elevation snow is around here.

elevation is important in marginal events anywhere. i used to live at 1350 in nw ct and would see huge differences just going down 600 feet to the next town sometimes.. but i do wonder if we're living on the edge more these days than we used to so we see it amplified.

i actually don't remember thunder, but a tree fell into our pool from the weight the next day.  this was in silver spring.  i think we lost power for a couple days too.  that storm was like january 2011 on steroids.

true, i guess i just mean like from dc to places 10-15 miles north and west.  i wouldn't think going from just above sea level to a little bit up would make that much of a difference but sometimes it does.  like bob chill just said it's snowing in rockville and i'm in bethesda and nada.  this is why i literally drive north on 270 during these types of events now just so i can see some snow.

Yep, 1979 PD1 was tops in my lifetime, but Feb 83 was sick in the thunderstorms with cloud-ground lightning and booming thunder...then Feb 87 was more like Feb 79 for sheer intensity....plus it was intense for most of the storm....9 hours....  So after three intense events in a 8 year span I didn't see rates near that until Feb 9/10, 2010.

yea it sucks.  i've actually been tempted to move to a snowier area lately.  i'm getting tired of hoping for snow.  if boston wasn't so far up 95 and the ocean wasn't so chilly up there, i'd consider that move, but this area has a lot to offer and probably worth the weak winters.  i guess i need to take more trips up north in the winter just to satisfy the craving.

Steady rain.

Expecting about three flurries just before the precip shuts off at 1130pm and skies clear. Back edge is coming up faster than that asteroid that's hurtling close to Earth. At least these heartbreaks are consistent. Models are coming into decent agreement that any low that forms along the front should stay far enough east to keep us mainly dry.

lol

it's rough sledding 'round here.

As someone who grew up in the mountains, I can't tell you the number of times I would look up at those mountains and it would look like you had drawn a line with a ruler where the snow began. You literally would have tall trees with snow at the top and none at the bottom. A hundred feet can make a big difference, 300 is a huge difference sometimes.

Bear in mind I was living in northeast Baltimore, Hamilton area, for 79, 83. and 87.  So good things happen sometimes even in the cities.

There are plenty of houses for sale in Damascus. We almost always do better than Rockville on these marginal events. :)

yeah i grew up in the high desert of so cal with a san andreas range right in front of our house (well, 15 mi away or so).. we were at like 2800, peaks there to like 5000... i got used to seeing snow but not getting it at a young age. moving to nw ct warped me for the rest of my msg board years tho.. getting the most snow was my thing. now it will never happen again. :P
