snowstormcanuck
Absolute whiteout right now. Environment Canada just put us under a snow squall watch. Would have been in bed already if I didn't think it had a chance of nipping us here in TO.
michsnowfreak
. That map is a joke and way off and not just here in MI. Per that map this area averages 48? I think not. Most areas near-just west of us 131 average between 90 and 105 from Van Buren ( Bloomingdale average, 94.1" ) on north. The 70+ line runs along from halfway between here and Kalamazoo on up to just east of Grand Rapids ( Grand Rapids average is 75.6" per GRR ) on north. Going strictly by population centers with 50k + here is how they rank. A few of the numbers are slightly off ( unsure of the data source they use? ) but it gets to the point. http://www.city-data.com/top2/c464.html New York ( thanks to Lake Ontario ) actually kicks @ss as far as THIS goes. Pretty sure atleast 50+k live in Muskegon area ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muskegon,_Michigan ) and the average there is about 95" or so. Thus population wise MI/NY are the top 2. Granted MA gives MI a good run. Most of the areas in VT/NH that average that much more are remote ski resorts. Same with the UP. Thus who cares. But yeah i know that was the point. Nationwide maps like that are always a LOL especially in places like MI where you would need a more hi-def type of map for accuracy. I do lol at the little bump in Lenawee county that supposedly averages under 36", as well as that spec in Detroits NE burbs. I dont think so. As I said, the lowest official average in MI is Detroit which is 42.7". The only states in the U.S. that can say that no area of their state averages under 40 inches per season is MN, WI, MI, ME, NH, and VT.

Yup, Muskegon averages 95 to 105 inches. I too think the UP and New York state are the winners. Muskegon itself has less than 50,000 people but the "Metro area" consists of about 170,000. The heavy snow just returned big time. Yeah, we had to take a detour on 401 - we got off at Hwy 24 thru Cambridge I believe and rejoined the 401 about 5 miles west - just in time to see 9 OPP with lights flashing going eastbound. 3 of them at once across all lanes that appeared to be a slow moving blockade of the entire road - not sure what it was about but then we saw 6 more heading eastbound a bit farther back. Probably was most of the detachment for the area....

GRR hasn't done so hot this winter. I think they have been playing it safe lately by issuing advisories for extended periods of time. However, with the heavy snow, wind, visibilities below 1/4 mile many times today, we clearly should have been in a warning.

They have as well over-hyped some stuff too and thus see the most recent LES event just prior to this one. Very few seem knowledgeable when it comes to the lake stuff at this office unlike most of the other offices downwind of the lakes. It has always been like this as long as i have lived here atleast. They are much better with severe stuff etc.

They say one thing in their discussion, have a different thing in the zone forecast, then have contradicting info between headlines and their maps...often just posting map of snowfall amounts directly from the NAM. It has been dumping snow here all day and no mention of it.EDIT to add...postings map at 5 p.m. of "snowfall reports", most of which are from the morning, is also laughable. michsnowfreak
This is without a doubt the best winter the snowbelts of MI have had in at least 4-5 years. I cant WAIT to get up to Paradise next week to spend a few days in the deep stuff. Areas west of Paradise have 40"+ on the ground. I check the Tahquamenon Falls statepark weather data and the last 3 winters have not been up to snuff. the peak depths were not impressive at all for them the last 3 years (in 2011-12 the 24" was very brief following the early March storm...essentially the last 2 winters have had largely sub-20" depths, which sounds funny to say, but is pathetic for that area). Tons and tons of white gold in da UP! Peak snw dpth...TAQ...DTW 2011-12.............24".......5" 2010-11.............18".....16"2009-10.............26".....10" 2008-09.............40".....14" 2007-08.............43".....10"

on_wx
That was incredible -- total whiteout. Still ripping snow. It's impossible to measure with all the drifting snow, but there is a 1.5 ft drift on the walkway that appeared in the last 30 minutes and feet burying fluff on the driveway and sidewalk with huge drifts covering the sidewalks. Where did all this snow come from?? We've been upgraded to a warning. Edit, that band is sliding south fast. Snow is already done here. Can't believe that just 20 minutes ago you couldn't see the neighbours house.
