From RAH

THAT TURNS OUR FOCUS DOWNSTREAM ACROSS UPSTATE SOUTH CAROLINA...TO
WHAT WE THOUGHT WOULD BE THE PROVERBIAL "WILDCARD" WITH THIS WINTER
EVENT. OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF HOURS...CONVECTION HAS DEVELOPED NEAR
GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG(PRODUCED 2 INCHES OF SNOW)...ALONG THE
TILTING CUSP OF THE POTENT VORTMAX AND UNDERNEATH TREMENDOUS
COOLING/STEEPING LAPSE RATES ALOFT. RADAR AND SATELLITE IMAGERY IS
IMPRESSIVE WITH A COMMA HEAD/BAROCLINIC LEAF EMERGING...WITH A GOOD
LIKELIHOOD THAT THIS FEATURE/CONVECTION WILL GET BETTER/STRONGER AS
THE UPPER PV ANOMALY CONTINUES TO EXTEND DOWN INTO THE MIDDLE
TROPOSPHERE.

THIS AREA WILL HAVE TO BE MONITORED OVER THE NEXT 6 TO 9 HOURS
AS IT PIVOTS EASTWARD WITH THE POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE A CONCENTRATED
AREA OF HEAVY SNOW...AND POSSIBLY SOME THUNDER SNOW(EARTH NETWORK
LIGHTNING DETECTION SYSTEM HAS DETECTED ONLY ONE LIGHTNING STRIKE AT
THIS TIME BUT AN UPTICK IS QUITE POSSIBLE)!

WHILE SOME OF THE HIGH RESOLUTION CAM MODELS ARE FINALLY STARTING TO
PICK UP ON THIS BAND...CONFIDENCE REMAINS LOW ON WHERE AND HOW THIS
BAND WILL EVOLVE. GIVEN THIS UNCERTAINTY AND WITH THE EXPECTATIONS
THAT THE BAND WILL IMPACT A VERY SMALL/CONCENTRATED AREA...WILL ALLOW
EVENING SHIFT TO MONITOR THE TRENDS AND UPGRADE THE ADVISORY
AS NEEDED.

That's not the center, that's a lower pressure blip. Look at the wind fields. Yes, there's a trough extending westward, but it's no big deal.

Actually, no it's not...check out the visible imagery if you don't believe me...the low is NOT farther offshore and this will matter for folks further north

This is my weenie question of the day. Since the sun is out could that enhance instability when these heavy convective snow showers come over head? Could this lead to some thunder snow?

Good question. The sun was out in The Upstate before the snow hit and we had a beautiful clap of thunder along with a heavy band.

Here on the Catawba/Alexander County line, we ended up with about an inch in 45 mins.  Just flurries now.  Amazing how fast it went from nothing to everything white.

No thundersnow here, but definitely some incredibly heavy rates.  Same totals for me.  Roughly an inch in about 45 minutes.  Took the kids out to play in it.  Built a snowman and had a snowball fight.  It's all melting back off now, but light flurries are beginning to fall again now.  I'll try to upload some video later.

I've noticed that it's been getting darker to my west. I just went outside and saw "fog" off in the distance. As I watched, the "fog' got closer and closer, then I started seeing a huge expanse of snow flakes heading towards me like a wall of snow. Then it hit and suddenly it was snowing moderately.

It's small flakes right now, but it's definitely the accumulating kind! This is the leading edge of the lee-side trough moving through now. Looking forward to see it snow hard now ! Get ready to the east ! It's coming !!!

Sun broke thru here for 15 minutes about 20 minutes ago. Now the sky has darkened considerably as the heavy band approaches from Hickory and Statesville. Temp had been 38 to 39 all day. Sun broke thru and we went up to 44. Since the dark clouds have rolled in 15 minutes ago the temp has fallen 5 degrees. 39 now.
