Islip hit by the meteorological hat trick in the last half-year

Consider what has occurred in Islip, NY in the last six months:

Tornado just outside Islip in August 2012.

Hurricane Sandy (albeit not making landfall there) in October 2012.

Verifiable blizzard conditions in February 2013.

How many places can you say have had a tornado, hurricane, and a blizzard all in a six month period?

That's why I live here.

I'd think never. There are probably just a few locations ON EARTH where this is possible. Northeastern US is obviously one of them . North of a certain point chances decrease greatly of a hurricane strike. South of a certain point blizzards are one in 50 year events (or never occur)

The tough one for ISP is the tornado.  The other two happen, athough within 6 months of each other is uncommon; the last time was probably 1960-61.

I was thinking 60-61 also but I don't know of any tornados in 1960 or 61...on Staten Island we had a fo tornado in August of 2003 and a blizzard in February and December...Washington DC got a hurricane in 2003...

I believe that this may have been one of the only tornadoes known to impact Islip while moving NNE

and forming south of Long island. It seems like most Western to Central Suffolk tornadoes have

more of an easterly  heading and track along warm fronts or sea breeze boundaries. There was

also another Tornado to impact Breezy point early in September that formed south of Long island

with the very warm SST's.

The magnitude of the snowfall at Islip may have been considered a 100 year event, and it would

be interesting to see the specific numbers on that.

The sharp turn to the left of Hurricane Sandy into the New Jersey may have been considered a

a 714 year event. This recent study just completed is a very interesting read:

  • 1 year later...

Weather Underground has daily loops for any day going back to 2005.

Thanks, I found the radar loops (linked), but am now wondering if there is any way to control the speed/timing of them or to pause them and capture screen shots and the like.  It appears as if all one can see is a very fast 24 hour loop that can't be stopped.

Just curious - anyone know where I could find a radar loop of the heavy rainfall period from Mt. Holly and/or Upton? I've seen the radar totals, but not any loops. Thanks.

Try this link.

If you zoom in on Nassau and Suffolk Co...just wow
