Hurricane Sandy (albeit not making landfall there) in October 2012. Verifiable blizzard conditions in February 2013. Northeastern US is obviously one of them . North of a certain point chances decrease greatly of a hurricane strike. I was thinking 60-61 also but I don't know of any tornados in 1960 or 61...on Staten Island we had a fo tornado in August of 2003 and a blizzard in February and December...Washington DC got a hurricane in 2003... In reality it probably is the only place in modern history this has happened. Throw in the minor earth quake and Irene and we have had a pretty insane period the last couple years. bluewave Posted February 13, 2013 Share Posted February 13, 2013 I believe that this may have been one of the only tornadoes known to impact Islip while moving NNE and forming south of Long island. It seems like most Western to Central Suffolk tornadoes have more of an easterly heading and track along warm fronts or sea breeze boundaries. There was also another Tornado to impact Breezy point early in September that formed south of Long island with the very warm SST's. The magnitude of the snowfall at Islip may have been considered a 100 year event, and it would be interesting to see the specific numbers on that. The sharp turn to the left of Hurricane Sandy into the New Jersey may have been considered a a 714 year event. Thanks, I found the radar loops (linked), but am now wondering if there is any way to control the speed/timing of them or to pause them and capture screen shots and the like.
