June Severe Thread

Yes, I was talking about the lack of severe storms around here. There has been plenty of rain. This week has been the exception. And I never understood why someone would want rain and to not be able to go out and enjoy the sun and warmth.

I've never understood why someone would not enjoy the sound of rain falling, seeing the drops falling through the air, making puddles bigger and bigger, watching the little streams of water that rush down the streets,....and oh yeah, the life that rain nourishes.

You could always move to Seti Alpha 5. It's always sunny and warm there...it's a little windy, though.

SPC....

...CENTRAL/ERN CAROLINAS INTO THE SRN DELMARVA PENINSULA...
WATER VAPOR IMAGERY INDICATES A WEAK UPPER VORTICITY MAX ALONG A
MINOR INFLECTION POINT IN THE MID/UPPER LEVEL MOISTURE DISCONTINUITY
LOCATED OVER FAR WRN NC. MODEL GUIDANCE MOVES THIS FEATURE EWD
ACROSS THE CAROLINAS AND SRN VA THIS AFTERNOON. DOWNSTREAM FROM
THIS SYSTEM...VISIBLE IMAGERY SHOWS WIDESPREAD CLOUDS OVER COASTAL
SC INTO ERN NC WITH SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS OVER THIS AREA. MORNING
SATELLITE TRENDS HAVE SHOWN CLOUDS THINNING OVER MUCH OF SC INTO THE
SRN PIEDMONT OF NC WHICH WILL PERMIT AREAS OF STRONGER HEATING AND
DESTABILIZATION TO OCCUR WITH MLCAPE REACHING NEAR 1500 J/KG IN SOME
AREAS.

THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR NEW STORMS TO DEVELOP OVER CENTRAL PARTS OF
THE CAROLINAS INTO SERN VA AS THE SHORT WAVE TROUGH MOVES EWD
THROUGH THE EVENING HOURS. MODEST SWLY FLOW ALOFT OF 25-30 KT WILL
SUPPORT MULTICELL STORM STRUCTURES WITH OCCASIONAL SHORT LINE
SEGMENTS DEVELOPING. WEAK LAPSE RATES AND RELATIVELY HIGH FREEZING
LEVELS SUGGEST THE HAIL THREAT WILL BE LIMITED. HOWEVER...HIGH
VALUES OF PW COUPLED WITH DRY MID LEVEL AIR APPROACHING FROM THE
WEST INDICATE A FEW STORMS MAY BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING LOCAL
STRONG/SEVERE WIND GUSTS THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING.

Took these yesterday of the lesser half of the shelf set up south of Wake County. If I was a little more south and had my $600 camera instead of my iphone I would have done a little better. Edited them in lightbox because the iphone camera has little to no contrast, could barely see the cloud just the scud in the first pic. Click for full resolution!

Just got put under a tornado watch.

As did Fayettenam...CAPE at 3,000 j/kg 73 dew point, shear not too impressive though.  So with the high instability and all that moisture, but low shear (25 kts), how is the realistic outlook for a tornado or 2 in crl NC?  What other ingredients are there that one could look at?

Discussion SPC.....

DISCUSSION...TSTMS EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN NUMBER/STRENGTH WITH
CONTINUED SFC HEATING ALONG TWO CONFLUENCE AXES OVER THE NC/SC AREA.
THE STRONGEST HEATING SHOULD OCCUR WITH ERN-MOST AXIS OVER THE ERN
PIEDMONT/WRN CSTL PLN...WHILE A SOMEWHAT STRONGER WIND FIELD WILL
EXIST WITH WRN AXIS NOW OVER WRN NC/SC
. ASCENT ASSOCIATED WITH
APPROACHING UPR IMPULSE FROM THE ERN TN VLY...INCREASING LOW TO
MID-LVL FLOW ASSOCIATED WITH THE IMPULSE /50 KT WSWLY 700 MB WIND
ATTM IN ERN TN AT MRX PER VWP/...AND RICH LOW-LVL MOISTURE SUGGEST
POTENTIAL FOR SUPERCELLS/LEWPS WITH A RISK FOR TORNADOES...IN
ADDITION TO NARROW SWATHS OF DMGG WIND.
