Chicago WX Posted February 6, 2013 Share Posted February 6, 2013 Just got me thinking, after reading the Feb 6-8 thread...who wins the season snowfall contest between Boston, Chicago, Detroit, and Milwaukee. Well, the answer is Milwaukee...but it's a two horse race in that contest. If we look at who finished last, it's a tie between Boston and Chicago...with Milwaukee having the fewest, by a large margin. This of course doesn't speak to big snowstorm climo, we know the answer to that question. Started the data with 1890-91, when Boston snowfall records began...or the ones I could find. Its actually a good comparison because the cities total snowfall averages are similar, although winter itself is basically a different animal in the 4 cities. If you like winter for all it has to offer, Boston would be your last choice...if you like winter for the chance to see a crippling storm, though it doesnt necessarily show in these NOWdata stats...Boston would be your first choice. A lot of people tend to forget how crummy a Boston winter can be when they DONT get those storms. Using NOWdata 1981-2010 averages Ranking season snowfall MKE: 50.0" BOS: 45.1" DTW: 43.8" ORD: 36.4" Ranking days per winter with 1"+ snowcover MKE: 60.0 DTW: 46.8 ORD: 43.7 BOS: 24.5 Ranking days per winter with 1"+ snowfall MKE: 13.8 DTW: 13.3 ORD: 11.1 BOS: 11.1 Ranking days per winter with 3"+ snowfall BOS: 4.9 MKE: 4.8 DTW: 4.3 ORD: 3.5 Ranking days per winter with 5"+ snowfall BOS: 2.8 MKE: 2.1 DTW: 1.7 ORD: 1.2 Ranking days per winter with 10"+ snowfall BOS: 0.5 MKE: 0.3 DTW: 0.2 ORD: 0.1 Ranking days per winter with a MAX temp of 32F or below MKE: 51.8 ORD: 45.1 DTW: 43.6 BOS: 24.7 Ranking winter mean temp MKE: 25.2F ORD: 26.4F DTW: 27.7F BOS: 32.1F Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
