THIS WARNING IS BASED ONLY ON THE EARTHQUAKE EVALUATION. AN EARTHQUAKE OF THIS SIZE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATE A DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI THAT CAN STRIKE COASTLINES NEAR THE EPICENTER WITHIN MINUTES AND MORE DISTANT COASTLINES WITHIN HOURS. That was absolutely insane, and it happened in the middle of the night after Christmas (I was obviously online). Things weren't as fast then as they are now (social media!) but it was clear it was bad--the morning really was when the destruction came to light, though.
