green tube
I consider myself to have been contradicting TWC, but as you wish... Anyway, here's real "ripping" snow... took these a week ago. Too bad it lasted less than an hour, I think it was the best snow of the winter here. (if the quality is a little poor, sorry, these are iPhone pics) http://www.raymondcmartinjr.com/personal/Elko/07-2013/01-January_2013/14-Snow_on_January_27th/01-Heavy_snow_squall_just_after_midnight/ (note, the real "ripping" is toward the end of the set...) elko looks positively bustling. so... are the margaritas really awesome and the mexican food really serious at the commercial casino? btw, if you scroll thru those photos quickly, it looks like moving video. true story. winterwx21
Agreed. If we could get a several hour period of light snow like this every other day through all of winter with temperatures in the teens and 20s, we'd maintain a snowcover, and no one would be able to complain about a coating of snow being a huge inconvenience. And it looks so beautiful. About half an inch here btw. Of course, that would be great and I wouldn't have 1 complaint. But we know that's impossible. This winter we get a half inch to inch, and it's gone the next day. There has been no snowcover at all, so I'm sure you can understand the complaints. I wouldn't complain if we had a constant very light snowcover. But there hasn't been one. However, we had 2 great winters in a row before last winter. I know things have to even out. Not surprising seeing 2 lousy winters after the 2 great winters. Anyway, I'm up to a half inch here in Piscataway. But just flurries now and radar is indicating it's about over. Disappointing event here, but better than nothing.
RU848789
Just got in from bar hopping a bit with a friend and we have about 5/8" here in Metuchen. Enough to make it very pretty outside and to make the roads very slippery (side roads - main roads like 1/287 are fine), but not what I was hoping for. Let's see if we get part 2 or not. Stayed for a week? Not here. I got a little less than 1 inch of snow from the cold blast. With high temps in the 20s the next day, I figured the snow would stay on the ground. But it didn't. Despite 20s, the sunshine got rid of most of the inch by late afternoon. I'm sure this half inch I have now will be gone by late afternoon tomorrow as well. tmagan
Everyone rejoice! EWR is now above 10" for the season But KNYC isn't, and there is a chance, actually fairly good one I think, that it can have its first back-to-back under 10" seasons. donsutherland1
I'm doing some back of the envelope calculations to see if Central Park may be able to set the record for lowest back-to-back DJF snowfalls. Last winter and the current one are in the lead at this point for back-to-back DJF snowfall futility. Current: 2011-12 and 2012-13: 5.0" (includes yesterday's 0.1" at NYC)--2011-12: 4.5"; 2012-13: 0.5" Records: 1996-97 and 1997-98: 8.7" (1996-97: 8.2"; 1997-98: 0.5") 1997-98 and 1999-99: 8.7" (1997-98: 0.5"; 1999-99: 8.2")
famartin
0.4" final total back home in Ewing... melted out to 0.04" too, 10:1 ratio. Lift must've sucked in the snow growth zone.
Capt. Adam
Current radar shows the bulk of the precip offshore. But the last couple of frames show a decrease in the size of the offshore precip shield and what looks to be developing precip shield northwest of there currently right outside of NY Harbor. Norlun trying to develop?

I know a lot of people don't like Steve D on this board but he just posted about the norlun trough Inverted troughs and the associated precipitation can be, actually typically are, very difficult to forecast for and must be watched by an hour to hour basis. This afternoon I expect an inverted trough to develop and potentially produce a period of light to moderate snow from Ocean and Monmouth Counties of New Jersey up through Kings, southern Queens, southern Nassau, and southern Suffolk Counties of New York. This band of snow will be capable of producing an additional 1 to 4 inches of snow on top of the coating to 2 inches of snow that has already fallen. This forecast is of course very volatile and will have to be monitored hour by hour.
