Models are not even close to correct with current temps/initialization.

IJD is down to 8. Plenty of readings in the 10's. Even high res 00z NAM was predicting 24-26.

Could be a very icy morning!

Classic rad cooling though with 2ft+ of fresh snow. Not a bad idea to go way way under guidance.

Not sure it makes a huge difference for tomorrow morning... we'll see.

You've been doing a nice job on TV btw. Nice work.

Question regarding "trained spotters" who measure snow.

I was talking to someone who said he was a trained spotter at one time and used to give snow totals.

He had said that when he did it, if the storm was greater than 12 hours in duration, and even a 24+ hour storm he would just wait till the end and just take a measurement then.  Isn't that Not really the way it should be done?  I always thought that clearing the board every 6 hours gave more accurate results.  Infact waiting till the very end of a long duration storm could give you rather less of what your true total should be.

Not a big deal, but I was just curious as to what others think.

This is taken from a pdf doc file I have of an older article (90's) which I believe was in the Boston Globe or New Yorker.

"In sparsely populated rural areas, local NWS officers ask spotters to record temperatures and provide rain and snowfall totals. To measure rainfall, spotters use NWS-supplied rain gauges—glass or metal buckets with a funnel and a built-in ruler. To measure snowfall, the NWS recommends placing two flat boards painted white (preferable since white doesn't absorb sunlight and therefore keeps melting to a minimum) side by side in a backyard. The spotter lets snow pile up on one board through the course of a storm and measures its total height at the end. Snow on the other board is measured and wiped clean at regular intervals to determine changing precipitation rates throughout the storm."

Sounds like this guy didn't bother with the "other" board.

I'm not spiking yet-if we were for some reason to get little snow the rest of the way, then I'd remember for one great snowstorm in the middle of a front end snowless torch and a back end dry/cold period....

LOL, the GFS has 5 threats in the next 16 days for the Northeast.

I remember how in 10-11 we were sitting on 2/1/11 and there was 3-4 feet of snowpack everywhere and there was a storm progged for the following week-folks were talking about 100 inch yearly totals.....the progged storm flopped and we basically went snowless the rest of the way....not saying that's the case here, but who knows if any of those threats materialize into anything....
