What does csi and mpv stand for?

Conditional symmetric instability and moist potential vorticity. If you reeeaaallly want, you can dive into those topics and have your head explode. LOL.

CSI is what can cause narrow, but heavy bands of snow and rain actually. It is an instability that is released when the criteria is met and a parcel is allowed to rise in a slant wise direction.

MPV reduction is a key ingredient to help with CSI. It reduces the instability in a layer (but not pure upright convection) such that the slantwise moving parcel has a good push to move vertically.

If you want, I suggest anything related to James Moore who has modules and PPTs out on this topic. This guy was amazing. RIP though.

Could have been some CSI, but  to me...it didn't have that look when I caught the radar images earlier. I'm sure it was possible with pretty strong moisture and temp gradients. Nice MPV reduction can just enhance the vertical component of the circulation.  The 12z GFS sounding had a conditionally unstable look at the top of the saturated layer which isn't surprising. That can lead to more convective type stuff.

Just a guess anyways, I don't have AWIPS EPV type tools at my disposal either.

Wow at the 7.5" in Cape May County!  Someone measured a half-inch in King of Prussia, too.  Only got a trace at my office in KoP 1.5 miles southeast of the mall.

You know it's bad when I have to weenie out over a Cape May clipper..lol.  I love synoptics, but we haven't had the fun of playing around with that up here.

Haha this must be a first for any new englander...Cape May county can stand tall and proud today

But seriously, no love with the clippers on today's runs...as far as im concerned, this winter can go S a bag of D's (any Louis CK fans out there will get what I'm trying to say)

A whole bag of 'em!

I fully expect it to either a) crap out as we get closer or B) trend too far south to affect me...Its been primarily option a so far this cold snap, but i actually like option b for the 2/5-6 clipper..seems to have the more potential as many have noted, but it will probably miss me (Keep in mind I'm up in stamford, CT so option b doesnt necessarily apply to this forum)

BTW, can't say anyone called for 7" in Cape May.  Nobody had that pegged.  Even the HURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR missed the intensity.

Yesterday 21Z RUC put down .47" QPF.  Haven't seen anything on ratios/QPF today, but 15:1 gives you that accumulation.

There was close to a half inch in Bala (was down there for a meeting....didn't even know the snow band fired up and moved over while I was in said meeting :axe:).

That band ment business man, I was at work in Ardmore didn't even know those 2 bands even fired up until a coworker said its really snowing outside, loaded radar scope and whoa, then once done I measured at work had a half inch of surprise snow.
