SR Airglow
Hanging out in the New England forum for this one since I'm in stamford, but wanted to pop in and say that my other locale(Lake Placid), seems to be racking up nice numbers, Whiteface reporting 14" and friend of mine says my yard up there is close to a foot. DeltaT13
Rochester airport just reported 9 inches, so Rochester will have to get another 6 for me to bust. I don't see that happening. I never would have believed it if I hadnt seen it, but we picked up 8 or 9 inches of pure LES fluff overnight. Still snowing moderately! The ratios on this stuff are a joke, gotta be 25/30:1. My first estimates on totals in my backyard are somewhere around 17 or 18 inches. Heading out for measurements soon.

heavy_wx
Probably another 3" here last night, although there is a large amount of drifiting with bare ground over some areas and drifts greater than a foot in others. Light snow right now from some shallow lake effect, just barely being sensed by the KTYX radar.

DeltaT13
The numbers from this storm are a bit out of whack. Depending on the time interval between measurements, we could have gotten anywhere between 12 to 21 inches from this event. Shorter intervals between measurements would really inflate the numbers. I currently have 14" on the ground but this new fluff is compacting fast. Great stuff! 10" final total,KROC reported 11" as of 4am.

I currently have 14" on the ground but this new fluff is compacting fast. Great stuff! Yes...a few years back over at Easternuswx, I had tried to convey to some posters the variability in totals reported based on intervals of measurements. For some reason they didn't understand the concept of time and compaction.....especially as the ratios go above 20:1. I did some research for the NWS about 15 years or so ago regarding heavy snowfall, and various measuring intervals, rate determination etc. The obvious conclusion was the more intervals, the more inflated the "total" was vs. what ended on up as an "on the ground" total (which over in the NE thread, as we speak, is how many are "determining" what fell....erroneously so). But what really stood out when doing my experiments (measuring snow on 30 different snowboards during a 12 hr. insane LES event) was just how fast the snow compacted in the later stages of the event with 25:1 ratios.....(settling rates were near 1"/hr.) Most people don't realize just how different the totals can vary given the same storm, with different intervals of measurement....not to mention when to actually "set the clock" to begin the next measurement. The NWS provides a guideline of no more frequent than every 6 hours, and no less frequent than every 12 hours (which even with these guideline, leaves the potential for a lot of variability in totals, JUST from the potential variances within those guidelines.) Snowfall measurement is inherently arbitrary, and is literally an inexact science. Arguments can be made for many different techniques, adjustments, intervals, etc. but in the end we are left with the scrutiny of the public's eye...which during pedestrian storms (those of 12" or less) correlate well with "official" techniques....But when you start getting into an "officially measured" 36" LES snowstorm over 2 days that never gets "snow on the ground" much over 25", the public is more skeptical of the report....such is the difficulties of living in an area that routinely receives "feets" of snow at a time!!!!!
