The GFS paints a much better picture than the NAM does. It has some really good snow on the TN/NC boarder and even some good snow down into NE AL and also some really good areas in North GA look like they could do really well. Also the GFS has that second piece of energy dropping down further south and that will help enhance the NWF snows.

600 AM CST SAT FEB 2 2013

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON CST TODAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HUNTSVILLE HAS ISSUED A WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY FOR FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET...WHICH IS IN EFFECT
UNTIL NOON CST TODAY.

* TIMING AND AREAS AFFECTED...BEGINNING BEFORE 9 AM...AND ENDING OR
  CHANGING TO RAIN AROUND NOON.

* ACCUMULATIONS...LESS THAN A TENTH OF AN INCH OF ICE ACCUMULATION.

* IMPACTS...A QUICK LIGHT GLAZING OF ICE IS LIKELY SHORTLY AFTER THE
FREEZING RAIN OCCURS DUE TO THE COLD AIR AND GROUND TEMPERATURES IN
THE LOWER TO MID 20S. THIS WILL CAUSE HAZARDOUS ROAD CONDITIONS
RATHER QUICKLY...ESPECIALLY ON BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES. TEMPERATURES
WILL WARM TO ABOVE FREEZING BY LATE MORNING OR EARLY AFTERNOON
WHICH SHOULD MELT ANY OF THE ICE ACCUMULATION.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW...SLEET...OR
FREEZING RAIN WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR
SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE
DRIVING.

New winter weather advisories out for TN. The models, even the short range, don't seem to have a handle on how quickly the radar returns have ramped up. Even lightning strikes in some of these clouds.

Wow! just took a look at the OHX radar & the precip has filled in nicely. GSP is saying around 4:00pm here but it is trucking thru TN so it may be earlier.

Looks like the 6Z NAM came in with a little more moisture for the central mnts. While their will be a big disparity in snow totals from N to S. Wouldn't be surprised to see Buncombe finally end up in the WWA.

Need to get some clounds rolling into Buncombe County before too much solar heating; sun is coming out but see a few clouds coming in from the west.  It would be great to get a little more snow than expected for a change.

My buddy in Franklin TN says he has white out conditions... dangerous driving.

what part of tenn. is franklin in maybe the middle of tenn?

South of Nashville, middle TN. Family in Smithville also reporting accumulating snow. Radar shows it knockin on my door with 24 degrees. Sure hope this doesn't get wasted as rain later but it probably will.

but why is it that buncombe county is not in the wwa again. its hard to believe every time we have a shot at snow everyone around us is in a wwa but not buncombe county. maybe they'll put us under one later. i was hoping for maybe a couple of inches out of this one since last night and last week was a skiffing. everyone keeps saying how good wnc as a whole looks and more precip. keeps showing up with each run.

Asheville gets shadowed by 5000ft mtns on all sides except south. Downslope kills QPf in Asheville many times. When I lived there for 2 years i saw many times AVL get squat while waynesville gets 3-4 inches. It was quite annoying to see happen over and over. In fact the valley where Asheville sits is one of the driest parts of the state.
