So when do we start handing out grades for this winter. For CLT and GSO I would give them a B, RDU gets a D+.

No way does GSO get a B unless we have a great closing to winter.  We're still not even halfway to our snowfall average and have torched all winter.  RDU probably needs a D-, at best.

If it didn't snow again for the rest of this winter, I'd rate this one as a D+ (C being an "average" winter).  I've seen worse, but it wasn't exactly a good one.  Last year's winter gets a D- and only that because we got 1.5" of snow on 2/19/12 that kind of saved it from being a complete disaster.

Lmao a trace.

That's infinitely more than you got, man.

I thought you had up over 4" for the season, which is 1" under GSO's mean?  I know GSO's average is roughly 9" so it's probably a C with that taken into account.

Based on a period from the 90s through today, I'd give this winter about a C so far. If you take into account a longer period, I'd probably give it more in the D range....for RDU, that is. If it's warm from here on out, the grade will drop some.

Well that's a good point, since 1990 RDU has averaged 5" of a snow a year (24 year stretch), and only had 4 10"+ seasons. The previous 24 year stretch (1965-1989) RDU averaged 8" and had 8 10"+ seasons. It's quite ridiculous the drought we are in. So maybe we need to accept the fact the climate has changed and this is the new normal and gone are the days where we see a 10"+ season.

Also, it's been 9 years since RDU has had a 10"+ season, that is the longest streak ever over a 130 year period, the previous record was 7 years, which of course happened in the 90's.

Well, yes, if one goes by the median, then that is quite true (mean is 5-6", I think, though I read that from a secondary source, so I'm not 100% sure it's right, but it seems sensible enough).  I'm spoiled by my 18-20" from the winter of 2009-2010, though!

However, winter is more than snowfall to me.  We really haven't had much in the way of cold this year, which hurts this winter a lot.

This winter has been a lot better than last year's, though.  The only good thing I really have to say about last year is that it didn't really tease us.  Aside from the 2/19/12 event (which produced around here), there really were no serious threats and no busts, letdowns, etc.  I can handle that a lot better than watching serious snow threats melt away before my eyes.

The winter of 2008-2009 gets a B- from me.  I got fringed on the Inauguration Day Snowstorm, but I got hit good with 6" on 3/1/09, which made it a nice winter and put a good taste in my mouth heading into spring!

The winter of 2009-2010 gets an A+.  It was definitely the best winter of my lifetime.  Two major events and a few other smaller, more nuisance-level events to keep things running.  The only additional thing I could have asked for was a true 12"+ Big Dog, but maybe that will come again someday.

The winter of 2010-2011 gets a A-.  The only real significant events came in December with a pair of events in early- to mid-February and then, of course, the 6" from the Christmas Day Storm.  I saw snow fly many more times over the rest of the winter, but nothing really significant came of it.  The fact that I finally got to see a White Christmas pretty much guaranteed that it would get an A!

Lol. Remember I'm in the lava pool.

:lmao:

March 2-3rd, winter's last hurrah (or slap in the face)...weekend rule...

We've had a good track record in early March as of late...

We had a major snowstorm on March 1st-2nd, 2009.

We had a major snowstorm on March 2nd-3rd, 2010.

We even had some tokens flurries/light snow in late March 2011.

It's time for another major snowstorm!  :pimp:

hey I'll help you put in a chairlift if you let my kids come sled ;-)   Man every time I see those pics I envy that 4 board fence, it sure looks like a good one.  I just put up about 500 ft of that stuff myself  on the front side of my barn.

And glad to hear you got some flakes.  This is almost too embarrasing to admit, but yesterday I think I saw ONE flake. literally one. Not 10, not 20, not 3. just ONE.   However I could tell it was flurrying up along the Lumpkin Co. ridgeline between Springer and Suches.  I wish we had a poster on here from Suches.   Maybe one day I'll have a cabin up there and I would be the GA version of SnoJoe in NC.   While everyone else talking about flurries I'd be posting stuff like Temp 27 degrees, 4 inches new snow on the ground.

LOL on the chair lift.  I hope the fence is a good one and holds up for a long time.  500ft is a lot of work my friend that's for sure.  Hey 1 flake is better than zero.  I'm lucky I looked out the window or I would have missed my 10 minute flake fest.

Your right about Suches.  That is the perfect spot to be in GA for consistent cold and snow as most of that area is over 3k ft high and also benefits from upslope snow as well.  I think they got like 5-6 inches out of that deal a few weeks ago.

GSP airport officially recorded 2 inches yesterday . Makes second time in about 2 weeks I have seen snow fly, plus the light icing in Jan. If nothing else happens,I'm going B-

go figure, GSP had 2 inches and here in asheville nc we've had a trace this winter.  since when does it pay to live further south, it looks like it does,  what a rotten winter so far.

GSP talking wwa for all the nc mtns. late monday nite tuesday morning.  surprised there is not more chatter on here tonight.  or is everyone worn out from this whole winter of all the storms kinda under performing.

Not everybody lives high up. 32 degree showers never really work out for Wilkes/Surry. Already seeing vague precip shadow from HPC.

Wilkes gets WOTY for that maps post in the storm thread where he claimed "many" were waiting for it, based it off of really one run of the GFS and then claimed he was correct with his call for the most part.

Blended the NAM and 1-2 other short term models too...GFS always throws precip up to Wilkes/Surry but I have to go over and beyond to discount it if the short range models don't agree. Lots of hard work and decisions to sweat over.
