yoda
UKMET and GGEM? Are they on-board? UKIE at 96 didnt show up on the meteocentre map... so I dunno. GGEM is a southern slider -- 998 off of wilmington at
Bob Chill
This is the kind of run that makes Wes stiff. If this keeps up through the weekend he'll get engaged. He has no problems squashing weenie hopes and dreams 8 days in advance. But now that I think about it...it's a good sign he isn't here and hasn't done that yet. All the pieces are coming together. TUweathermanDD
I got just under 7"....IAD/BWI got near 8"....generally a 6-10" storm for DC with +SN....obviously the timing made it more significant, but I wouldnt say it was overrated even down here...the next day it was a pretty serious dig out for the burbs...very heavy high QPF snow...I think Philly got 16"....pretty classic lower end KU KNYC got like 19.5 I believe... 11 here

Turned into a brick over the next couple of days, too. Yeah, I wouldn't say "Commutageddon" was overrated (despite the name), it was a real disaster in the metro area. And knocked my power out for 3 days. Lots of outages, I can't recall the exact number but Pepco caught hell for being unprepared.
Ian
It was one of the most impactful winter storms in this area, ever. almost entirely because of when it happened. late the next day there was like 1" of snow downtown.

PhineasC
it was a very good storm...an imperfect storm but that is 95% of our storms...It is not that easy to get a 6-10" storm in DC...there were a fair amount of 10"+ readings in dc metro too....obviously it was much bigger in Balt and points north and east Hoffman storm, right? 14-16 here, as I recall. Saved that winter.

I think I had thundersnow during that one. 2010-2011 was the winter where NE MD kept getting more than everyone else. By more I mean 2 or 3 inches when IAD got 1. Bob Chill
You just know the Euro will crush this good vibe. Maybe. Depends on expectations. If it shows a good vort like the gfs tracking across the s but doesn't pop a good surface to run up here then were totally gtg. If it shows nothing then a big step back is needed. I'm pretty sure it's going to be close to the gfs but I'm all in so bias is in play. Lol
Ian
your recollection isn't great with this one....anyway...Happy Birthday! my recollection is fine about the storm itself.. im sure you have better recollection of the days after (i checked DCA cover so it didn't disappear instantly)... but i was out in the storm quite a bit and temps were not cold. i know you have your snow narrative.. i'm not saying it was a bad storm, but it was mostly remembered because it crippled rush hour. put it in any other time slot and it's not the gigantic impact storm locally. It got down to 43 degrees in my place by the time power came back on. Quite a contrast to when I lost power for 3 days after this summer's derecho in the 99 degree heat! Ian
I think I had thundersnow during that one. 2010-2011 was the winter where NE MD kept getting more than everyone else. By more I mean 2 or 3 inches when IAD got 1. we had thundersleet and thundersnow. it was very dynamic and loaded with moisture. one of the higher totals since ive been here in a storm but not my personal fav. t-snow etc is overrated imo. i'll take more consistent mod rates and something that doesn't soak me when i'm out in it. i know it's part of our climo and was a big storm overall.. but compared to like jan 30 2010 no contest on which was better to me personally even with similar accum in dc. PhineasC
we had thundersnow too and incredible rates...it was a very good storm even in DC.... I have pretty fond memories of that one. We willed it back from an inland rainer. How often does that happen? We still had the confidence of 09-10 on us, I think.
Ian
yeah...the timing was huge....I still dont think it was overrated, but I cant disagree with the bolded...people trapped for 10 hours on the highways made it more memorable, but I think timing of a storm is a huge component anyway.... im not sure we think the same way about snowstorms. they are fun though.
