Damage In Tolland

Recommended Posts

In this city up here, The school dept does not do early dismissals ever, There is either school or no school, And typically it all depends on the time when it falls and how much, It has to be at least 3-4" before they call it here

Makes me think of Ft.Kent.  In my 10 winters there, a total of 1.5 days of school were lost due to wx, both in 1984.  In Feb, a 1-3" forecast turned out to be 18", most of which fell in about 9 hr overnight, so the parking lots weren't plowed out.  The half day came with the March 14-15 dump of 24"+ (I had 26.5", CAR 29.0"), with schools being let out at noon.  There was 12-14" new and 2-3"/hr at that time, and everyone got home safely, even those 25 hilly miles away.  (Rumor was that school was never called because the superintendant lived next door to the HS where his office was located.  He said no, that he'd send his German shepherd out to the street to get the paper and if she made it, schools would be open.  Sometimes he had to help her get back, though...)

Every town has sodium chloride, And some use a liquid calcium chloride as a pre treat...............

Fine for driving on the day after, superslime for driving during the storm.

seems odd to me that the snow is not accumulating on the black top surfaces.  Temps definitely cold enough, but driveways and roads are wet.

They've probably been drowned in salt the past week or two with all the mini weenie snow events.

where the sidewalks intersect the driveway, those are snow covered, while the black tops on either side are wet.  That couldn't be salt.  The black tops are always warmer, but surprised as cold as it's been, that it is melting.  It's coming down nicely now and still melting.

Personally, I think the Groton/New London temps are often a bit high for this area...I believe the reporting station in Groton is at the airport, which is surrounded by marsh and within a stone's throw of Long Island Sound.

is there some decent icing going on down there?  It's tough for that area to hold cold on SE wind.
