I was bored at work today, and read through some of the GHD threads. 4-5 days out, we were already on thread #3. Pretty good "weenie sense" by most that something big was going to go down.

I should go back and read through those threads. Have only read a little bit here and there. Were we talking up the sleet potential at that point?

Thread #3 we were talking mix, but 50/50 on sleet and/or freezing rain. Well, the Euro was telling us that. GFS...still lying to us. :(

There are some saved model images in those threads that are pretty good though. What a storm.

Picked up 0.3" of rime-like snow overnight so this event total was 2.3" on 0.09" of liquid equivalent. I was looking over my stats since Jan 31st and its been quite an unusual bonanza of lake effect/enhanced snow here. This is my 18th winter measuring snow and Ive never had a stretch that has equalled this for LES. the whiteouts give me a hunger like never before to live in a snowbelt, regardless of the synoptic situation of said snowbelt!

Some interesting data...

Jan 31-Feb 17, 2013....

~I have totaled 15.3" of snow on 0.68" liquid. Even when you add in the little bit of ice and rain in that stretch, the liquid total is 0.86".

~The peak snow depth was 6" (Feb 5th) with a core sample of just 0.3"

~FIVE times I have had 1-1.5" of snow in 1 hours time (Jan 31, Feb 1, Feb 2, Feb 8 (synoptic), Feb 16)*

~Season total sitting at 35.3" with 2 more months of snowfall potential to come...if I was a betting man, 2012-13 will be an above average snow season. Would be REALLY nice to cap it off with a bomb

*6 times this winter, have to add in Jan 28

You've mentioned "bomb" several times now. Is that just a euphemism for a bigger storm or are you looking for a true meteorological bomb (storm deepening 24mb/24 hrs)?

euphemism for a bigger storm. its really amwx-talk. Ie, words like bomb, torch, etc that really stray from their actual meaning are used frequently here.

Gotchya. Our climo is similar and odds are a true bomb wouldn't work out well for us.

The infamous blizzard of '78 doesnt even make Detroits top 25 snowstorms list  I have now had SIX...yes SIX instances this winter where I have picked up 1"+ of snow in 1 hour or less time. Also seen plenty of thundersnow in recent years. Im totally fine getting a "run of the mill" storm with a healthy deformation where I see no insane rates or thundersnow, or if it took 20 hours to accumulate the 8+ of powder Im shoveling, just give me the 8+ inches!!! ;)

went out riding some of the back country trails this morning.  was only around 8 degrees with a persistent light snow....on occasion a little beefier. didn't see many riders out at all either.  was very quiet and peaceful, all I saw were deer. Some off trail areas, snow was a little too deep for riding.

At least I have one thing to look forward to in my eventual old age, retiring and moving out of southern Michigan.
