That's true. Severe weather is my first love, so I could never see myself living on the east coast.

However, not all of the Midwest is a big storm desert. Athough the frequency pales in comparison to the east coast cities, you have much higher big storm potential in Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis than in Detroit/St. Louis/Toronto/Indianapolis, in addition to the constant snowpack, frequent penny fluff events and the active severe weather seasons.

For example, how many 12"+ storms has Chicago an Minneapolis logged in Comparison to Detroit and Indianapolis? Chances are, if you live in Chicago or Minneapolis for at least a half decade, you're going to experience a major snowstorm/blizzard. In Detroit or Indianapolis, not so much.

I've learned that Colorado lows are generally not good for Detroit and Toronto as they tend to cut to our west, giving us rain and sleet. Texas lows and Gulf lows are the best.

Nam coming in colder for tomorrow probably just a colder rain

Our Weather Network up here is calling for freezing rain in Markham, a northern suburb of Toronto, tomorrow night and a cold rain for Toronto. Hopefully our snowpack depletion can be kept to a minimum as the prjected high for Monday is now 40F.

The good thing about this warm air is that it will be short-lived. However if we get the rain to go along with it, our snowpack will definitely take a hit. Hamilton has seen way too much bare ground this winter so I hope it sticks around as long as possible.

Not even close, Michigan/Ontario are much more active than SNE with respect to severe weather.

If you're just talking about Boston or Providence it's nowhere close.  Farther west it gets better, especially towards upstate NY.  The Albany area is probably the best location if you want both monster snowstorms and summer severe.

I'd probably say somewhere a bit further South like DC, although the snowstorm potential is a bit more muted, when they do get a good one it is usually huge and they are much more prone to severe weather than Albany along with affects of tropical systems.

The cold air is impressive, 19 F at MSN at the sfc and 23 F on top of the meteorology building, which is above the calm layer and probably within the residual layer (same as the mixed layer from the daytime but cut off from sfc forcing). 36 F at 850 hPa, so this is a very deep inversion. This could turn interesting quickly, it will take quite a bit of conduction from warmer precip falling through the cold dome and large scale warm advection to get us above 32 F. They estimate 2-4 hours of freezing rain for Madison, but this is a complicated problem and I think it's difficult to limit the possibilities at this point with any confidence.

It seems like when we have a snowpack the boundary layer always ends up colder than projected,  the 00z GFS is 5 F warmer than the actual sfc temperature at 9z...

Worst case scenario is the freezing air holds on until the precip clears at 21z and we get about a quarter inch of ice. HRRR says freezing rain ends at 16z, with roughly 6 hours of freezing rain.

Just finished with 0.42" of rain.  This is the 5th decent rain event already this year, while we've only had one snow event.  :axe:  The yard is an absolute mess of solid ice and standing water with a bit of snow left as well.  There is a lake behind my neighbor's garage.  We need to get the darn ground thawed so this stuff can soak in.

I put some plants in front of my south window last week to get them some better sun, but I think we've had about 2 hours of sunshine in the last five days.  :(

12z NAM, you dirty tease.

Yeah looks good for you guys to the southeast.

Up to 0.24" now.  Rain is pretty light and showery, so probably not much more precip to add to that total.  Dry slot clearing things out nicely over southern Iowa.  Hopefully that moves in here later and clears out this grungy garbage.

Not really taking it seriously, and even if so, it's a grazer locally. I'm kinda expecting it to shift the precip way south in the next couple runs.

Edit: maybe a little more than a grazer if extrapolating but still not taking it seriously.

Leveled off at 32° here with mostly sunny skies late this afternoon. Still over half the snow in the trees still.

With the sun partial out, but not blaring down, it made for a good photo day in the countryside. Posted several new photos under this link > http://www.americanwx.com/bb/index.php/topic/39283-beginning-snows-of-blizzard-2013/

Noticed there was plowing still going on today!

Sunset tonight
