Probably came from my area!

---

I'll post the rest of my noteworthy pics here:

This was at the end of the day, so no real melting on the trees.

Shoveled driveway - done! ~5 hours to do, including yesterday.

Shoveling wasn't quite done at this time!

Looks like a Rocky Mountain retreat lol.  Wow.  It's amazing how much snow changes the look of the landscape.  Around here it's brown and sort of depressing looking lol.

May make a run at 50 here on Sunday.  Looks like another wet system on the way.

I took her out to play in the snow.  It's deep enough now (13" or so) that she has to hop like a rabbit to move through it.  It's just that when the temperature gets above 30 degrees the snow sticks to her underfur in clumps.  It took an hour for her to thaw out and dry off.  As soon as she got in she wanted to get on my lap and snuggle while still full of snow.  She just doesn't get it that I don't want her melting all over me.  Had to lock her away in a room to melt.

Cool pics Frostfern! Love the dog pics. That's what I got too: 13" otg.

Yesterday and even early this morning people were riding snowmobiles around. One guy went to the convenient store down the road to get a few things! Haven't seen people do that since GHDBliz.

Couple more pics.

He should be glad it didn't happen in October with foliage.  That happens it's worse than an ice storm.

I am glad! That would have played havoc on my maple trees.

This is one of the few times that the snow on the deciduous trees has actually stayed on more then 12 hours. Maybe 5% of the snow fell off today. Usually the wind or sun knocks it off, but today it was cloudy with light winds. The wet snow timing and freezing at night under light wind conditions made it possible.

Really like that first dog picture above^ with her ears in the air, lol!

This is a radar shot of the mega-death band hitting CT. Unreal. I've never seen snow so heavy on radar.

Some parts of southern CT must have been pushing 60 dBZ.

How's that even possible?!  Must have been baseball sized aggregates pouring down!  Usually if the upward motion gets too intense within a band you get denser graupel mixing in which causes the rate to plateau at around 3-4" per hour.  5-6" per hour rates are something you usually only see with drier lake effect snow.

Wow, yeah I was reading 6" per hour! I think the most I've experienced was about 2.5" an hour with lake effect. Yesterday at one point I was close to 1.5" per hour.

Clouds should start breaking up soon, forecast low is 16°.

Probably the convective element.  The vertical build of convection aids in tremendous "downpouring" of precip.

Turtle - Usually in most cases when my car won't start in the winter, it's usually battery related. I don't think it's cold enough for gas to freeze!

That's my main hypothesis as well, especially the way the engine slowly clicked when trying to start it. I've had the same battery since 2008 so it's probably time for a new one anyways. At least that's something I can buy and do myself.

Before I cleaned the snow off my car today. It wouldn't start... either the battery died or the gas line is frozen. Will try again when it gets warmer on Sunday, and then take appropriate measures if it's still dead. F*cking winter.

Probably just a battery.  I used to have a '98 GT and had to replace it at a fairly low mileage.

Station on the west side of Madison is already down to -1.  Also down to 8 in Freeport IL.  Still 24 here with some clouds holding on.

6 F at MSN and that -1 F is Middleton, pristine radiational cooling conditions. Top of the met building is well up in the radiation inversion and at a relatively balmy 15 F.

Clouds coming in from the west though, and fog approaching from the east. You can actually see the radiation inversion with the fog/stratus, it appears darker/warmer than the underlying land. http://mapmaker.aos.wisc.edu/scr3/sat/g8/g8msnflash.html

Though its by the skin of their teeth, Detroit has locked double-digit snowfall amounts in for all 3 meteorological winter months in 2012-13 (Dec 10.6", Jan 10.0", Feb 10.5"+).

Today, just 8 days into the month, DTW has already surpassed the average snowfall (10.4") for the entire month of February, so our epic Feb stretch may continue if the ripe pattern going forward produces.

Feb snowfall since 2007:

2007: 14.1"

2008: 24.2"

2009: 8.5"

2010: 27.0"

2011: 31.7"

2012: 10.2"

2013: 10.5"+?

Longterm average for Feb is closer to 9", current 30-year average is 10.4".

If anyone was curious about that debate of what area is better for winters, the GLOV or SNE, go check out some of their photos over there. I would love to have a storm like that here if it meant irregular snowfalls.

The rather large fuel source to their immediate east sure helps a lot. :D
