February 2013 Forecast Contest, Temperatures

UPDATE -- 1030h Friday March 1 --

All monthly anomalies are now posted and scoring has been revised to final values.

A new feature in the scoring table appears for penalized (late entries) -- a second line of scores are the adjusted scores that are used to calculate any high score for station awards -- raw scores before penalties do not qualify but adjusted scores that are still highest are recognized. These adjusted scores may not add up to subtotals or totals exactly due to rounding errors.

Notes:

ATL* ... best human score (normal was best)

Congrats to I Need Snow, Don Sutherland, Normal (take a bow) and Brad1551, plus those who scored a "best forecast" and basically anyone who went cold(ish).

Houston leaked a lot of anomaly in the last three days and fell from +3.2 to +2.0 The other stations all managed to fight their way back from large negatives at some early stage even through mid-month, to nearly zero (thus the splendid performance of Normal).

Some time tomorrow, look for the updated annual scoring based on these and January's scores which are in the next post down..

When the February scores are finalized, I will add them to these January scores. In this ongoing cumulative table, any penalty points will be redistributed to all six station scores and the two subtotals, so if you pick up penalty points, factor that in when checking your scores in this table. In January, there was only one entrant with penalty points (skierinvermont, 12%) and I have taken those scores as an example of how this will change the table entries for cumulative scores ... all scores are rounded and the totals may not always add up as a result:

monthly scoring table before penalty

SKIERINVERMONT ................. 50 .. 94 .. 90 ... 234 ... ... 04 .. 10 .. 00 ... 014 ... 248

annual scoring table ...

27 SKIERINVERMONT ................. 44 .. 82 .. 79 ... 205 ... ... 03 .. 09 .. 00 ... 012 ... 217

These are the finishing values

DCA ... --0.7

NYC ... --1.4

BOS ... --0.6

ORD ... --1.6

ATL ... -- 0.6

IAH ... +2.0

There is a scoring table posted two posts above this one -- I had that posted with provisional values earlier and adjusted them to these numbers.

Then I will be able to work out the combined Jan-Feb scores (the Jan scores are in the first post back so scroll past that one to find Feb scores).

(As it says in the other post, congrats to "I Need Snow" and Don Sutherland, also Brad 1551 and various others who bagged a high score and/or a best station forecast. You can see I'm not cheating anyway. :)

________________ Annual (cumulative) scoring table __________________

This is the sum of all forecast scores for all categories.

The number of * beside forecaster name gives a count of months missed.

Under "best scores" the first column refers to this cumulative table and the second column keeps track of monthly best scores, in that CL means the classic division and EX means the three new stations.

* asterisks show how many months a forecaster has missed ... no asterisk, has been in every month

"Best score" awards are listed first by cumulative best scores from this table, and then by all best scores for stations and groups every month entered.

Monthly winners so far are Mallow (Jan) and I.need.snow (Feb). This is coded into the table by number of the month (in the monthly column).

The annual temp is the running average without weighting for different length of the months.

Thanks, but I should find out something, do the numbers in the tables (like the three I just posted above) line up vertically for everyone?

Reason I ask is that they line up for me but maybe if you have different settings they don't line up? I don't mean perfect alignment, just is it obviously lined up or are they way out of alignment? If I hear that people can't read the tables I will look around for a solution. Just so you have something to compare on your screen, on my screen looking at the above table, the first column of numbers are just about perfectly aligned and the last column of numbers might jog left or right by about one number here or there. You should see what a mess these tables are in first stages of editing. But the software on this forum is so balky that I take the whole thing to another forum, assemble the tables over there in a reply box, and then post them here. I find that the program here does odd things like sometimes it won't block copy or delete, sometimes it will, and sometimes it just strips out lines for no obvious reason, then it goes off the screen and I have to use autosave. I do the exact same sort of stuff on another weather forum (in Ireland) and everything goes much faster, in fact the reply box looks like the finished product so I don't even need to use the preview function.

Would appreciate if anyone could say whether the tables here are aligned properly for you. And thanks for using the template, by the way it is more predictable about the block copy function from post to reply box, it's just within the reply box that the situation goes south.

They kind of line up... it works at least. Download one of those Excel-like programs, paste the data in there and take screen shots. That's what Mallow and others have done in the past.

Hope you don't mind Roger, but I made a chart for the forecast to date (through Feb)...using your numbers. I have no problem doing it every time we end another month, if that's ok with you. Again, thanks for your time in totaling all of these scores.

Looks great to me, were you able to import my numbers and if so, do the dots make it more difficult? I could always PM you the names and scores without the dots between the scores if that would make the process easier. Also does your chart program total the scores or did you just type in my numbers? I spent half an hour earlier today checking each total against the Jan and Feb contest results above the annual post and found two errors in addition (Sacrus and normal ha ha). If anyone was looking at the table earlier today they might have seen a different order from about 5th to 10th, that's because Sacrus moved up when I spotted my math error. I have tried to be very careful adding the scores in the two monthly contests but I was thinking of moving the whole thing over to an excel file for March so maybe now I won't need to do that.

Yeah, my chart does totals scores and such. Feel free to PM me the names/numbers/scores, don't need the dots, and I can put them into my Numbers/Excel program.
