The irony is that the same trees and brush which tend to make the thermometer read cool in summer, help the precip gauge catch the snow more effectively by blocking the wind.

 

That 1.0 report tonight seems high but it makes up for what I think they've missed so far this year, they've record 0.05 so it would be 20 to 1 ratio which I guess is possible but I didn't measure nearly that much.  I've always wondered why their liquid equivalent was so accurate, I just assumed the heating element or whatever is in there worked better.

Its the exact same gauge they use at the major airports, but of course, a lot more protected from the wind.  Wind has incredible effects on the catch of a precip gauge when it comes to snow.
