Well "technically" the snow hole on radar is false. Think about how the radar pulse gets higher the farther it gets from the radar site. Therefore, it is sampling a higher level of the atmosphere as it gets farther (hence the hole). It might "seem" accurate at times but technically it is a myth.

I know about the radar beam hole, but this is also a legit precip hole.  Nothing falling yet and I am just north of 66.

I think in reality though it is more of a horizontal lack of precip than a "hole" - But yes, point understood. But it is a myth. Often times people will report not having snow until they've been under returns for hours. Not the case here, though. Every case is a bit different.

this post confuses me....

I am in the hole indicated on radar, and I can confirm that it is not snowing here...but if it is snowing in Fair Oaks, it should not be long here (hopefully)!

I think any locales proximity to the radar beam plays a part on the capability or accuracy of the radar for that location.  I don't think the beam sweeps the same amount of vertical distance of two locations that are a different distance from the beam.  The beam's cross section, I think, is really a triangle, with the smallest angle at the origin of the beam.

But maybe not.

Edit: And if you were confused before, I'm certain this post clears it up.  More whisky.

You should send me your color table if you won't make a loop.

there's little waves and streamers embedded in the precip. looks like it's beefing up nicely in an orange/stafford/la plata line and even north toward dc but that area more. DM me your email on twitter.

dat snowhole right over my house

And there's "snow" over my house, and it isn't doing anything.  That's not an accurate radar.  I think it's picking up virga.  And I also think it's picking up my virga better than yours because you're closer to the origin of the radar beam.  It's cross-sampling a smaller vertical distance at your house, so you aren't getting "snow."

Regardless, you aren't missing anything.

People should stop quoting the big crappy radar

Here's why it's "crappy"...

From here:  http://forecast.weather.gov/jetstream/doppler/radarfaq.htm#everything

"The radar is also limited close in by its inability to scan directly overhead. Therefore, close to the radar, data are not available due to the radar's maximum tilt elevation of 19.5°. This area is commonly referred to as the radar's "Cone of Silence".
